Waves, Light, Imaging: Physical Science Reading Comprehension Passages and Questions (PDF) This very engaging collection of physical science reading passages about Waves, Light, and Imaging is designed to bridge the gap between science and literacy through strengthening reading comprehension and sparking scientific curiosity in middle school students. Each passage blends English Language Arts skills with accurate science content that supports NGSS classroom practice. Ideal for interdisciplinary learning in ELA and Science. Suitable for Grade 9 review, too! What Is Included? There are (3) informational passages: How Sound Travels: Sound starts with a vibration that squeezes and stretches nearby matter, sending a wave through air, water, or solid material. The ear and brain team up to turn those moving pressures into the pitch and loudness we hear, which is why sound needs a medium. Seeing Color: Reflection, Absorption, Refraction: Color shows up only when light hits an object and some wavelengths bounce back to the eye. Materials reflect, absorb, or bend light differently, so a prism, a black backpack, or even dim lighting can change what we see. Cameras: From Dark Rooms to Smartphones: A simple darkened box with a tiny opening once projected faint, upside-down scenes onto a wall. Adding lenses, mirrors, film, and later digital sensors turned that idea into cameras for art, news, and everyday life, ending with phones that can snap and share in seconds. Student Tasks for Each Passage: 5 multiple-choice questions targeting main idea, key details, inference, vocabulary in context, and use of evidence 5 vocabulary matching items with clear, student-friendly definitions 5 text-based questions that require citing specific lines or facts 1 summary prompt that asks students to condense central ideas accurately Full answer key for every section Available Formats for this Resource Word Docs Google Docs FULL CATALOG OF DOWNLOADING LINKS HERE Other Science Reading Collections and Topics You May Find in the Store: 1. Middle School and Freshman High School Digital Interactive Notebook - Cells and Organelles. Designed specifically for the 1:1 classroom utilizing any kind of digital device such as Chromebooks, Cellphones, or Tablets. This resource comes packed with 21 engaging activities spread over 31 interactive pages. It covers the Cell Theory to cell organization and includes a teacher answer copy. Each page was created to look and feel like a traditional notebook but was designed to take advantage of everything that digital brings. Digital Interactive Notebook for Google and OneDrive cloud services. If you don’t currently have a Google account, you can sign up for one completely free and get started in 5 minutes. If you’re a OneDrive user, no problem. Simply download the notebook as a PowerPoint file to your computer then upload it to your OneDrive account. The majority of the items in this resource are fully editable. In addition, slides can be added or removed easily to suit your classroom needs. This Digital Interactive Notebook is broken down into 6 chapters. Chapters and activities can easily be removed if they don’t correspond to your curriculum needs. The following chapters are included with your purchase. Chapter 1 – The Cell Theory Chapter 2 – Animal Cells Chapter 3 – Plant Cells Chapter 4 – Diffusion and Osmosis Through the Cell Membrane Chapter 5 – Unicellular and Multicellular Organisms Chapter 6 – Cell Organization THEN: Before computers, we used interactive notebooks to engage our students and keep their notebooks organized and accessible. This however required a lot of material and the unwelcomed task of lugging them all home with you to mark. But we used them because they were effective and allowed us to effectively assess our students understanding. NOW: Why use digital interactive notebooks? As prices decrease, many schools are moving towards a 1:1, computer-student ratio and are becoming digital, the way we teach needs to keep up. You don’t even need a class set of computer, a personal device (cell phone, laptop, tablet, etc. will work just as well). Digital interactive notebooks provide all the same means of organization and assessment but without the physical notebook. This… 1) Saves you from bringing them back and forth/storing them in your class. 2) Purchasing all the necessary supplies. 3) Having them get lost, misplace pages, etc. Once you purchase, you’ll get a direct link. This link will allow you to place your own copy of the digital notebook into your Google Drive folder. From there, simply distribute the file to your students. No notebooks, no glue, no scissors, not even a USB in sight. Everything is stored and can be assessed in the cloud from any computer in the world. If your students go on holiday, they can access it. If they’re sick, they can access it. What activities will you find inside my Digital Interactive Notebooks? • Interactive drag-and-drop activities • Embedded Videos that play inside the slides along with questions • Calculation questions • Audio recorders – students record and upload their own auditory answers to questions • Fill-in-the-blanks • Drawings – students create their own drawing then easily upload them to their slides using their device or computer • Research questions • Extension questions for early finishers, those wanting extra credit, or incorporated into the mainstream assignment • Vocabulary check on the entire unit • Lots more Click here to get immediate access to a sample file so you can see exactly what’s being offered → http://bit.ly/TWF-DINB . Keep in mind that the sample file is for my SPACE notebook but it does give you a good idea of how the resource is structured. What if my school wont pay for Google products or access to Google Classroom? No problem, G-Suite as it’s called, is completely free and includes everything you’ll need to access your digital notebooks. What if your students don’t have internet access for some reason? These notebooks can easily be made available off-line for access anywhere. Left-side/Right-side. Is there a place for students to include their own notes? Yes! That’s the beauty of going digital. You don’t need a left and right side. When you or your students want some more room, just add a slide and go to town. Worried about plagiarism? I use turnitin.com to ensure my students are submitting their own work. However, I attempt to make these as interactive and individual as possible, which all but eliminates cheating. Do you feel that your students will miss out on the hands-on experience they receive from traditional interactive notebooks? In today’s world, I don’t think that’s a concern. Your students are and need to be well versed in the world of technology and how to manipulate it to suit their needs. This resource will help. If you have any questions, please send me an email - devon@teachwithfergy.com

Modern Marvels: Panama Canal Video Questions

Modern Marvels: Panama Canal Video Questions
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Activities

The Panama Canal is a large waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. The canal is an engineering marvel and a key route for global maritime trade, allowing ships to save time and distance by avoiding the longer and more dangerous route around the southern tip of South America. The idea of constructing a canal through Panama was first proposed in the 16th century by Spanish explorers, but it was not until the late 19th century that serious efforts were made to build the canal. The construction of the canal was a massive undertaking that involved digging a 50-mile-long canal across the isthmus, creating an artificial lake, and building a series of locks to lift ships up and down the canal's elevation changes. The canal was built by the United States between 1904 and 1914, with the French having previously attempted but failed to complete the project . The canal was officially opened on August 15, 1914, and since then has become one of the most important shipping routes in the world. The canal allows ships to travel between the east and west coasts of North and South America, as well as to and from Asia, Europe, and Africa, making it a vital component of global trade and commerce. In 1999, the Panama Canal was transferred from the United States to Panama, and it is now operated and managed by the Panama Canal Authority. The canal continues to play a vital role in global trade, with millions of tons of cargo passing through each year. The canal has also become a popular tourist attraction, with visitors from around the world coming to see the engineering feat that has connected two oceans and changed the course of history. These movie questions are designed to help students grasped the important information from the History Channel video titled "Modern Marvels: Panama Canal." An incredible tale of drama, history, and action. See engineers tackle the most daunting project ever attempted. The video will serve as a great supplement to any history lesson about the Panama Canal and American Imperialism. Here is the link to the video: Modern Marvels: Panama Canal (episode 2) Topics explored in this movie: Theodore Roosevelt, Panama Independence, Yellow Fever, Engineering, Roosevelt Corollary Thumbnail Clipart Credit: Prince Padania
