This fully editable Lab Station on The Nervous System is meant to get your students out of their seats and engaged in the content. Each station not only offers a unique opportunity to test your students knowledge (offer an opinion, answer questions based on a video or reading, draw, etc.), but also provides a fantastic learning opportunity where your kids are learning through assessment. Each station comes with a description card while some also contain more detailed instructions, a reading, questions to answer, etc. Students are equipped with a recording sheet (passport) to write their answers. There is almost no prep for you. Simply print the cards, lay them out around the room and you're all set. An answer key is also provided where applicable. This lab activity covers: - Structure, Parts and Functions of the Nervous System - Structure, Types and Functions of the Neuron - Reflex Arc - Nerve Signal Transmission and Action Potential - The Schwann Cell and Action Potential - Sodium-Potassium Pump - Neurotransmitters and its Functions ---------------------------------------------- Bonus Activities: To ensure your students don’t have any downtime between stations, your lab also includes a 10-word word scramble and word search, both with an answer key. Unions Simulation Teacher Guide Hello and thank you so much for purchasing my Unions Simulation! My students have really enjoyed this, and I have enjoyed seeing the concepts and familiar battle lines come to life. I hope your students enjoy it too! The lesson is designed to have a warm up, a goal statement, an agenda slide, a (very) brief overview of work conditions and famous strikes, then the instructions to the simulation, and then finally a quick exit ticket to cement major ideas. In general for the simulation, students are divided into one of three groups: bosses, strike-breakers, and union leadership. Each with their own desired outcome or goal. Begin by walking students through the warm-up, goal statement, agenda, and mini-lecture to refresh their minds on the era in question. To start the game , prompt the “Bosses” group to announce how much they plan to cut wages by. If needed, try to encourage the bosses to announce a pay cut in the range of $10-12/hour. This is a number that is acceptable to the replacement workers, but unacceptable to union leadership–starting conflict Next round, prompt replacement labor to negotiate with the bosses. Prompt the Union group to decide whether the pay cut is “acceptable” and if not, what actions could be taken. From there, let the simulation play out until it reaches an organic conclusion. My classes have ended a few different ways– the union getting arrested for threats of bombs, the unions accepting a pay cut to $13/hour, replacement labor being hired at $11/hour after several set-backs, etc. The key is students realizing the tenuous relationship between unions and their bosses, and union members and replacement labor. At the conclusion of the activity get students back in their designated seat, discuss the activity, and administer the exit ticket. The included discussion questions will help them learn about borrowing money for a wedding and how that option can make it cost even more because of interest payments ! How to Use: 1. Print a 3-page budget project that includes a spreadsheet and reflection questions for each of your students. 2. Go over page one as a class. Students can share a variety of wedding sizes they have gone to personally. Discuss the wide range of wedding budgets people typically spend. 3. Give students time to pick their number of guests and their budget. Remind them they must figure out a way to pay for the budget they choose. 4. Give students one to two work periods to research real wedding items for each of the fourteen categories. They will need to have access to technology to do this. 5. Make sure students multiply items that are guest dependent and add up their wedding grand total carefully. Have them trade sheets with a friend to double check. 6. Go over the written reflection questions and then give students time to answer them. 7. This is a great play to help introduce Adam Smith or characteristics of the Free Market system. The play focuses on the life of Adam Smith. It ends by focusing on his ideas for a Free Enterprise system and how it was different from the Mercantilist system of his day. This takes about 20 minutes to do. Plus, you will want to give some time to debrief. In my classes, I have my students take some time to write a journal reflection on what they learned while performing the play. Have fun!
