In this educational activity , the learner will be presented with a set of food items, such as lettuce, cheese, ham, bread, tomato, pickle, mustard, and mayonnaise, along with a picture card of a sandwich. The goal of the activity is for the learner to sort the food items that go together to make the sandwich. Other food in this activity is baked potato, hamburger, taco, spaghetti, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, hot dog First, provide the learner with the picture card of the sandwich, and ask them to identify the different food items that go together to make the sandwich. The learner can then sort the food items into groups based on their function in the sandwich, such as the bread, filling, and condiments. To make the activity more engaging, the educator can use real food items instead of picture cards, and ask the learner to physically assemble the sandwich. This will not only reinforce the learner's understanding but also provide a hands-on learning experience. Next you can introduce the different food cards and discuss their differences, such as their taste, texture, and nutritional value. Then present the various sorting cards for the different foods and discuss the various different foods that go with the food card. Some food cards may have some of the same sorting cards For example cheese might be on pizza, baked potato, hamburger and a sandwich which makes it a great time to discuss how the some foods fit in with other foods. Lastly you could discuss the importance of a balanced diet and how the different foods contribute to overall health and well-being. The learner can also be encouraged to come up with their own healthy sandwich combinations, using the knowledge they have gained from the activity . By engaging in hands-on sorting the learner can develop important cognitive skills such as attention to detail, observation, and reasoning. If you want to give students extra practice with place value, I have just the resource for you. What You Get: This is a set of Place Value Loop Cards that was designed for 4th and 5th grade students who are working on or have mastered place value with higher digit numbers. It may be a great fit for 3rd grade students. It also works well as a review for students. It is a 1-page printable. How To Implement This Resource: This is a game that is meant to be played as a whole group. Whenever you are able to carve out some time during your math instruction, students will love getting a chance to play this game. The game will flow much smoother for a group of students who have a good understanding of place value. These Loop Cards mimic the game I Have, Who Has? You will print off the entire page and should laminate it for durability. Cut out each of the cards. There are 24 cards included. All cards have to be used for the game to work. If you have a classroom of 24 students, there will be an even distribution. If you have less than 24 students, you can take the extra cards and join in on the game or you can give more than 1 card to your students who have fully mastered this skill. Whoever has the START card will begin the game. Students will continue with the cards by saying the number they have and asking the question on their card to find the next number. Activities for this Ordering by Size Activity There is one worksheet for ordering from biggest to smallest and one worksheet for ordering from smallest to biggest. There is also one set of ordering by size cards. Students will gain practice with non-standard measurements by ordering the size of the wreaths from big to small or small to big. Teachers can choose to give students one of the cut and paste worksheets or the picture cards to sort the cards into the appropriate order. When to Use: Math Centers - The teacher can place the cards and worksheets in a math center for students to complete. Small Group Activities - Teachers can pull aside a small group of students who need extra practice with ordering by size to complete with the teacher's assistance.
