Race to Space Board Game
Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Space, Grade 4, 5, Activities, Games
If your science students have started or finished a space unit , I have just the game they’ll love. This is a Race to Space Board Game that can be implemented at any time. It is great for an introduction or a review. This is great for upper elementary students in 4th and 5th grade. Game Play Directions: --The goal of the game is to reach Saturn. --The first player rolls the die and moves however many spaces indicated on the die. --If you land on the nova card space, pick a card and answer the question. --The keeper of the answers will check the accuracy of the answer. --If the question is answered incorrectly, they will have to move back 2 spaces. --If they answer correctly, they get to stay where they are. --The first to Saturn wins! Teacher Instructions: --Cut out and laminate the game board and adventure/nova cards --Label the nova and adventure cards or print them on different color paper --Blank nova cards are provided if you want to write your own questions --You will need one die and game pieces for each player --You may want to assign one student to be the “keeper of the answers” or you can check the student’s answers yourself. --This game works best when played with 3-6 players. Hermann von Helmholtz - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Hermann von Helmholtz – Sensory Physiology Made Understandable Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) This material introduces students in grades 7–10 to the life and research of Hermann von Helmholtz – one of the key figures behind our scientific understanding of vision, hearing, and nerve conduction. Even if students already know a bit about how our senses work, most are surprised to learn how long ago these topics were explored in depth – and by whom. Helmholtz’s work at the intersection of biology, physics, and medicine still shapes modern neuroscience today. To make this complex content more accessible, I put together a compact set of resources you can easily use in a 45-minute lesson. It includes a short text, a fact sheet, quiz questions (with answers), and a few creative tasks to get students thinking and interacting. You’ll find both color and black-and-white versions – great for printing or digital use. There’s also an H5P version for those who prefer an interactive format. What’s included: A short, student-friendly text on Hermann von Helmholtz and his key discoveries A fact sheet activity to help students organize the main ideas Quiz questions (with solutions) to check understanding An open-ended task where students come up with their own questions and exchange them with a partner Ready-to-print or use digitally (PDF + H5P) Answer key included for quick correction I’ve used this in biology class as part of a unit on the nervous system, but it also fits well in lessons on sensory organs, neuroscience, or even the history of science. The material works for independent work, partner activities, or as a simple introduction to one of the most influential scientists of the 19th century. No extra prep needed – just pick the version that suits your classroom best. 🚀 Download now and bring the legacy of Hermann von Helmholtz into your biology lessons today! 📍 Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Heat and Light Investigation
Science, Physics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Activities
This is a Heat and Light Investigation. This small unit is a simple investigation into the sun as a heat source, along with a quick look at other sources of heat. Students will explore the vocabulary attached to the topic, how objects differ when in direct sunlight vs. in the shade, how living things are affected by the sun and its light, mechanical and electrical heat sources, and misconceptions about heat sources. At the end of the unit there is a quiz for you to give your students and there are answer keys wherever possible. • Explain to students that they will be working in groups to create a set of four movements they feel illustrate the meaning of one of the vocabulary words they’ve learned. • Separate your students into groups of three or four. • Give each group one of the Vocabulary Movement Cards. • As they are making their movements, they will also be verbally incorporating the vocabulary word and its definition. Example: if their word is ‘machine’, as they are doing their first movement they will say, “machine”. As they do their second movement they might say, “a device made to consume energy.” For the third movement they could say, “to produce another form of energy,” and for the fourth say, “to do some kind of work!” • Encourage students to USE THEIR SPACE: go high, low, and in between! • Give students enough time to come up with the movements as a group, practice the movements, and get ready to teach their movements to the rest of the class.
