My Unique Shape (Back to School & Get To Know You Activity)

In this product, you will combine graphing and SEL. This is the perfect back-to-school or get-to-know-you activity in any class-not just math! Students will receive a graphing page and a page with questions. Each question has a coordinate after it that the students plot on the graph. When the student is done plotting all the coordinates, they will draw a line to each coordinate and create a very unique shape. Some of the statements are; I like tacos, I have a pet, I have a sibling, I play a sport, I like sushi, I prefer outside to inside, I am an optimist, I like board games , my name has more than 5 letters, I have traveled outside the country, I speak more than one language, and I love gardening-among more. There are 20 statements. If a statement is not true for the student, they simply cross it off or skip to the next statement. This is a great resource for having students share and get to know each other, you will also get to know your students quite well from this activity. This would also be a great advisory activity at the beginning of the year. Another idea is to post these on a bulletin board afterward and admire the different unique shapes of your students. Students can also create an image from their shape if they wish-such as an animal, person, object, etc. One of the objectives of this resource is to allow students to reflect on their likes and dislikes and personality. The other objectives are for students to share commonalities and embrace differences. Lastly, you as the teacher will really get to know your students. This is fully editable so feel free to change the questions to your liking. You know your students best! You do not need to be a math teacher to use this resource! It's great for school counselors, specialists and advisory teachers as well.

In this SEL Boom Deck, students will learn about flower (healthy), weed (bothersome) and cactus (unhealthy) friendship behaviors. It is important for students to learn some of the behaviors that are bothersome and frustrating and to learn that they do need to address these sooner rather than later. Just like a weed ignored or not wanting to be dealt with, it can get worse and impact the friendship in a negative way. Some examples of flower (healthy) behaviors are; letting your friends have other friends, being there to help, standing up for them (being an upstander), and many more. Some of the weed (bothersome) examples are; bragging, copying a friend, not paying a friend back for borrowing money, and more. Some examples of cactus (unhealthy) behaviors are; being mad if something good happens to a friend, putting a friend down, gossiping, not letting a friend join their other friends, and many more. There are 24 task playing cards and 5 instructional cards so this can be played as a whole classroom lesson, a small group lesson, with partners or assigned to individuals to do as homework. There is a handout that matches the concepts for students to fill out to remember the different friendship behaviors and a question about what they can do if there friend is exhibiting either a weed or cactus type friendship behavior. This is a Boom Deck that is great for 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and sixth grade. If there are strong readers or the classroom teacher or school counselor can read each slide, this could be something 2nd grader also do. Fear of insects Social Story

For children who experience intense fear or phobias related to insects, this social story resource provides supporting explanations and coping strategies. Specifically tailored for children on the autism spectrum who may struggle reading social cues, the story aims to logically address the reasons behind insect fears and equip children with skills to manage them. Using a reassuring tone, the social story explains how most insects pose no real danger to humans, as many are so tiny compared to a person’s size. While some insects like bees can sting, the story gives facts about how insect stings rarely cause serious harm. It also highlights all the useful things insects do, like pollinating plants. The second half of the story outlines constructive ways children can deal with insect fears when encountered. This includes techniques like staying calm, thinking logical thoughts about how small insects are, and reminding themselves that insects are useful to their earth. By addressing both the emotional and reality-based sides of insect fears, this social story uses clear language and visuals to teach autistic children coping methods. It validates their feelings while also gently challenging catastrophic thinking. Friendly Versus Unfriendly Behaviors SEL Sorting Activity In this product, students will sort friendly versus unfriendly behaviors. You can have students do this independently, with a partner/group, or laminate for repeated use in a Center 's activity. There is no reading required. This is a great follow-up activity to your favorite friendship or friendly behavior story. This is a great resource for social-emotional learning, as a sorting activity, to increase social skills and friendly behaviors, etc. The Suggested Directions include: 1. Read a story about being friendly to others. Some good stories are How To Be A Friend by Marc Brown or a A Little Spot Makes Friends by Diane Alber-or any of your favorite friend books or books about being friendly towards others. 2. Print off all 4 pages to each student, partnership or group. This can also be used for a Center ’s activity. 3. If going to use over and over, laminate cards and sorting sheets. 4. Instruct them to look at the pictures and decide which is showing friendly behaviors and which is not showing friendly behaviors. 5. They will cut out the pictures and glue to the correct page (either Friendly or Unfriendly).

In this SEL Boom Cards resource, students will learn the difference between gossiping and venting. There are 24 task playing cards and 6 other cards that are explanation/introductory cards. This can be used as a whole class social emotional learning lesson where each student comes up to the interactive whiteboard and takes a turn guessing which one is the scenario. You can also assign this individually or as a group/partner resource. This is an appropriate topic for upper elementary and middle school students. Some of the scenarios are; someone is commenting on someone's lunch, someone is wanting advice about a group member not doing their part of the project, someone is making up a rumor about why someone moved to a new school, someone is upset about how a friend always wants to be partners with them and need advice.
