Changing Negative Self-Talk Into Positive Self-Talk SEL Presentation

In this Google Slide SEL presentation, students will learn how to change their negative thoughts into positive ones. There is a quote at the beginning of the slide show that says "Watch what you tell yourself, you're likely to believe it." by Russ Kyle. The students can share what they think this quote means to them. Then there is an educational slide on the value of changing their negative thoughts into positive ones. Then the students will have 12 slides to practice changing negative thoughts into realistic and positive ones. They can do this as a turn and talk with a partner, whole group instruction, or in their table groups. You can decide the best approach for your students. After they practice 12 different thoughts, the students will participate in an elimination game using a playing deck of cards. You will randomly pull a red or black card and students need to declare which one they think you will pull before you pull it. There are directions on the slide notes. The goal is for them to say out loud to the person next to them about which one they guess is going to get pulled for their own accountability. Ask students to pay attention to their own self-talk during this game. This game is based on luck only. You can play the game as many times as you want as time allows. Lastly, the students will get to color a mindfulness coloring sheet of a brain with their own name on it. You can make as many handouts as you have students in your class. Simply double click on the name and change it to the names of students in your class and press enter. Print off as many copies as you need. This game will help your children to learn to hear the sounds ‘ar’ and ‘or’ in words and to read words containing these sounds. This game is black and white for eco-printing at home, or to send home. A colour version can be found in the Lilibette's Resources store. Who is it for: Children who are learning the digraphs ar and or. Those children working in Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds Those children working in Speed Set 2 of RWI. Who can use the ar/or game? Teachers, parents, private tutors - anyone who needs it! How to make the game Print out pages 4 to 9, on card. Cut out the picture cards (pages 6 - 8). Cut up the ar/or cards (page 9). Write ‘ar’ on the back of one baseboard (pages 4/5) and ‘or’ on the back of the other. Write ‘ar’ or ‘or’ as appropriate on the backs of the picture cards. Find a bag or small box to put the small letter ar/or cards in. How to play the game This is a game for 2 players. It is best if an adult plays with each child individually first and then when each child in a pair is confident, they can play in together. The game can be played with the picture and word cards alone, without the ar/or cards - as a simple matching game. This is how it has been designed to be played: Take a baseboard each. This will decide who is collecting ‘ar’ pictures and ‘or’ pictures. Choose 6 ar and 6 or cards (you can choose different pictures each time you play). Scatter the picture cards picture side up. Take it in turns to take an ‘ar’/’or’ letter card from the bag/box. If the player with the ‘ar’ baseboards picks an ‘ar’ card, s/he may choose a picture with the ar sound in. Likewise with ‘or’. Players may only turn the picture card over to check that they are correct. If not, the picture card is replaced. The winner is the first to fill his/her card. Do: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your go and invite your pupil’s help, so they get even more practice. Look at the cards that are left. What sound do they have in them? Using an Inside Voice Social Story

Speaking with an appropriate volume and tone is an essential classroom skill. This Using Inside Voice Social Story teaches children when and why to use their "inside" voices in a clear, encouraging way. Social stories are an effective tool for teaching children about various social situations in a manner that is accessible and easily understood. The primary goal is to offer guidance on social skills, cues, expectations, and common responses, especially for those who may find such aspects challenging to navigate. While beneficial for a broad range of children, social stories hold particular significance for those on the autistic spectrum, providing valuable support in understanding and managing social interactions. Using relatable examples and pictures, this social story explains what an inside voice sounds like - quiet, calm and gentle. The story also discusses why lowering volume is important for not disrupting others. This Inside Voice social story fosters self-regulation and cooperation skills. It is ideal for teachers, counselors, therapists and parents working on classroom behaviors with children who have autism, ADHD or other special needs. The concrete explanations and supportive tone help reinforce appropriate vocal volume. Providing this story prior to circle time or transitions helps set students up for success. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. This is a set of ten lessons for struggling readers to help them develop reading fluency. The lessons cover short vowel words with and without a consonant blend. It includes 10 lessons, 10 decodable Reading Books, 10 matching PowerPoint presentations of the books + 10 packs of worksheets - a pack to support each book. This 10-week curriculum focuses on short vowel sounds and is designed for struggling readers. It includes 10 decodable reading books, each with only 10 new words per book to prevent cognitive overload. This pack is designed for children who have already learned to blend words with a short vowel sound, with both three and four sounds, but have not yet attained reading fluency. We study the ten words in each vowel sound, five each week, and then practice by using the activity pack. The child becomes very familiar with these five words. The child can then be given the next reading book and, to his/her great surprise, can read the book quite fluently without having to decode nearly every word. This gives the child an enormous boost. The process seems, in my experience, to help the child learn what is needed, once they can sound out words _ it helps them to learn how to store the words in the long-term memory, and I find it gets easier and easier as we go through the programme. The worksheets provide multi-sensory activities to help the child develop: Flashcards of the relevant words for each sound Phonemic awareness Strengthen consonant blends, which these children often find hard Tracking skills, which are again poor for many of these children Word differentiation - we tackle confusion words head-on (e.g. big/pig) Comprehension - as reading becomes more fluent, we can now build comprehension Fun print and go games And much, much more! The systematic, repetitive nature of this program makes it suitable for students with special needs, including those with dyslexia, cerebral palsy, or general learning disabilities. Ideal for small groups or one-on-one instruction, it helps develop reading fluency, phonetic awareness, and early writing skills. Teachers praise the simple download-and-print format that allows students worldwide to benefit. After completing this introductory short vowels pack, students can progress to more advanced phonics. Final or Ending Sounds Phonic Game Phonemic Awareness Activity A fun pack of two games to help children develop the important phonic skill of hearing the final (or ending) sound of a word. It covers the final sounds: t, d, k, g, p, b, m, s, n. Choose from: Build A Castle or Win the Race. The games are the same whichever you choose and use the same picture cards, but the choice of the game board means that children will not get bored playing the game again and again, plus the fact that you can increase the fun level to keep the children playing! (see below). Objectives This game pack has been designed to give children practice hearing the final sound of a word, something many children struggle with, especially those with a speech delay. It is hoped that, as the child has fun playing the game that the child's phonemic awareness can be developed. The game can also be used within speech therapy to help children distinguish between sounds which are produced in a like manner: k/g; p/b; t/d. Many children have difficulty with sounds that are produced using the same part of the mouth/voice/tongue. If this is true of your pupil, then I suggest that you start by playing the game with two sounds which are not at all similar. Once the child can confidently hear the final sound of a word, then the game can be played with sounds which are similar to help the child’s speech development and the ability to carefully discriminate between like sounds. Grade/ages These games are suitable for children of any age who need to learn to hear the final sound of a word. Games make learning easy, and children learn without knowing they are! Pre-K to teens with special needs will all love these games . The fact that the games allow for an increased challenge level is an added factor, making them games that children and young people will want to play again and again—all good practice for securing the skill of hearing that final sound! How many players? It is suggested that at first, each child plays alone with an adult until they hear the final sound. Then, up to 4 children can be invited to play together. Simply print out the number of game boards you need. Increase the fun level! Begin by playing the game simply. Once the child gains confidence and you wish to play again with sounds that are produced in a similar way or to give further practice, then add in some fun. Flag or wheel cards can be scattered amongst the pictures, and the teacher can choose what these mean - either extra turns or 'miss a go'. I made this game for a ten-year-old reluctant pupil. Here is an ultra fun game to help pupils learn to sound out words with both the long and short forms of OO as in moon and book. When introducing OO words, many children have particular difficulty sounding out short OO words. This game can take the stress out of learning. How to play The game involves each player having a baseboard upon which to build his/her tower. Players aim to be the first to build their tower and win! Word cards containing both long and short OO words are scattered on the table - with an 'oops' card hidden amongst them! Players take turns to choose a card. If it is read correctly, the player places it on his/her baseboard and begins to build a tower. Teachers and parents may give the child as much help as needed to read each word and turn it into a teaching opportunity. With more confident children, you can change the rules so that the card is returned face down to the table if it is not read correctly. If a player chooses the 'Oops' card, then the whole tower is wiped off the player's board and the cards are returned to the table, face down and play continues until someone manages to build their tower.
