Initial Blends Find and Colour Phonics Worksheets to Develop Phonemic
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Kindergarten, Preschool, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This set of 20 fun, Find and Color worksheets for initial blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One sheet for each of the following blends is included in the pack: tw, sw, sk, st, sn, sm, sp bl, cl. fl. gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on each worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheets unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear each cononant blend at the beginning of a word. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as possible, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: Answer keys are included on each sheet, in small print.

8th Grade U.S. History Formative Assessment for Fall Semester
Social Studies, Grade 6, 7, 8, Teacher Tools, Assessments
The 15-page 8th Grade U.S. History Formative Assessment for Fall Semester is a formative assessment designed for teachers to assess their students' ability to make meaning of historical documents and draw conclusions. Although it focuses on 8th-grade U.S. History, this formative assessment could be given to 7th, 9th, or 10th graders as well. Students will read and interpret a map, a graph, a chart, a primary source diary entry, and a political cartoon. It also includes a post-reading reflection for the students to complete, a key, and a chart for teachers to use to help them analyze which skills they need to teach or review. History standards don’t specifically address the skills students need to read maps, charts, and graphs, and to make meaning of them in a historical context. In fact, I’ve had students tell me that map reading is unimportant because they have GPS. However, they are then baffled when they see a historical map and are expected to draw conclusions or make connections, etc. to a historical event. Teachers need to teach students these skills.Although it specifically focuses on the European Invasion and Colonization of the Americas, the kinds of documents used to assess the general skills of interpreting and analyzing documents appear in any history curriculum. Teachers can then determine what skills to target in their teaching This formative assessment is not meant to be graded, but rather as a means to determine what reading skills teachers need to teach so students can better understand the content. At the semester's end, teachers can administer the same assessment to gauge students' growth in comprehending different types of documents and use it as a summative evaluation. Alternatively, they can assess each skill separately, such as by reading maps, graphs, charts, or primary sources, after conducting skill-building activities. If our students cannot glean important historical information from maps, or don’t understand what a graph is showing them, then it is hard for them to understand what they are studying. Check out my store, Intentional Teaching and Learning for other History lessons and units.

12 Election Terms for Middle & High School- Vocabulary Strategies
Social Studies, Government, Grade 7, 8, 9, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
The 17-page resource, 12 Essential Election Terms for Middle and High School-Vocabulary Strategies provides students with opportunities to explore essential vocabulary so that they can begin to build their knowledge as they delve more deeply into the election. The resource includes an inventive road signs metaphor to help students identify their level of familiarity with various election terms. It establishes a knowledge base from which they can dive into nuanced meanings of these words. The unique K.I.M Vocabulary strategy is used to explore different aspects of each word, including word families, roots, etc., further strengthening students’ understanding. The resource includes the following: About this Resource: a handy guide to orient teachers to the Essential Question, Guiding questions, standards, objectives, and learning targets, list of resources, preparation and time frame, and includes a link to a force copy for the Google Doc which makes the resource editable. Understanding Essential Election Vocabulary (Road Signs to Understanding Vocabulary) K.I.M. Vocabulary for Essential Election Terms and Key K.I.M. Vocabulary for Essential Election Terms Key Essential Election Vocabulary Quiz and Key The 12 words are: ballot, candidate, democracy, election, government, political parties, politics, propaganda, proposition, representative democracy, and vote. Once students have a clear understanding of the terms, teachers can assess their understanding through the quiz. The quiz includes 2 parts: a matching the definition with the word and answering questions about the words that will allow them to show their understanding. The Essential Question: "How do key election terms shape our understanding of democratic processes, and what strategies can we employ to navigate and utilize them effectively?" and the 3 Guiding Questions: "How do citizens engage with the democratic process through terms like "ballot," "candidate," and "vote," and what role do these terms play in ensuring representative governance?" "What strategies can individuals employ to critically evaluate the influence of "propaganda" and "political parties" in elections, and how do these terms impact the formation of informed civic choices?" "In what ways do concepts like "representative democracy" and "citizen" shape our understanding of government structures and the responsibilities of individuals within a democratic society?" encourages students to critically think about both the meaning and the impact of these words, not just on themselves, but also on our election cycle and our electoral system. Every four years, citizens of our nation get to choose our next president. Middle School and High School students are at the age where they begin to think of themselves as members of this country. Many of them witness their relatives voting, but many do not, either because their relatives are not citizens or because their relatives are disengaged from the electoral process. It is our duty as Social Studies teachers to engage our students in the electoral process so that they understand how our electoral system works and so that they see the value in participating in our democracy through voting.

Desert Survival Plan Writing Challenge | Geography & Skills!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Deserts are fascinating parts of the globe. Your 2nd-5th graders will choose from 4 deserts across the globe to write a story about their companions on this survival journey, the materials they'll use, and the features of the desert they'll put to use as they survive their desert journey! Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

The Mayflower Compact: Reading and Analyzing a Primary Source Document
ELA, Social Studies, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Language Development, Pre-Reading, Strategies, History, History: USA, Government, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
The Mayflower Compact- Analyzing a Primary Source Document, is a 27 page standards aligned resource that provides your 6th-9th grade students with strategies for reading, understanding, and analyzing a challenging primary source document. Our students need help developing the skills to read complex materials, especially primary source historical documents. Students need practice on how to read a primary source document, and reading it once isn’t enough. Your students will participate in a close read of the primary source document four times: 1. for context and origins (source the document); 2. for meaning; 3. for the purpose (argument or thesis) of the document; and 4. read like a historian. Students will collaborate in deep discussions developing their critical thinking skills as they delve into their reading and analysis of the Mayflower Compact. Through this experience, they will find that their discussions become richer as they work through the questions provided for each of the 4 Reads. The follow up to the lesson, the multiple choice and short answer questions will offer students an opportunity to showcase what they learned. This lesson can take 2 50-minute periods to complete. However, if we want our students to feel confident enough to tackle primary source documents written in the past in unfamiliar English, we need to give them the tools to do so. Even so, I have provided an annotated version of the Mayflower Compact to help your English Language Learners, students on IEPs and 504 Plans, and struggling readers. The Mayflower Compact- Analyzing a Primary Source Document includes the following: History and Reading for History Standards, Objectives, and Learning Targets Essential Question: How do founding documents like the Mayflower Compact shape the principles and practices of governance in societies? 3 Guiding Questions: "What were the key motivations behind the drafting and signing of the Mayflower Compact?"; "How does the language and structure of the Mayflower Compact reflect the religious and political beliefs of the Pilgrims?"; and "What principles of governance are outlined in the Mayflower Compact, and how do they compare with other early democratic documents or principles?" Lesson 1: What are Primary and Secondary Sources Lesson Plan 2: Four Reads: Reading and Analyzing a Primary Source Document The Mayflower Compact in its original wording and in Plain English 4 Reads Questions and Answer Key Multiple choice and Short Answer Assessment and Answer Key

"What techniques do authors employ to reveal characters' traits, motivations, and relationships?" and "How do characters' actions, dialogue, and interactions contribute to the overall meaning of the text?" help orient students to the key points they will be exploring as they choose their thesis statement or claim and develop their main points, find relevant evidence, and thoughtfully and deeply analyze the evidence. Each of the mini-lessons guides the students as they learn to write the essay or develop a deeper understanding of the essay. Perfect for RSP (Resource Specialist Program), ELL English Language Learners), GATE (Gifted and Talented), and General Education students, this unit is easily adaptable to meet the needs of all your students and their individual learning styles and strengths.

Ocean Adventure Writing Challenge | Geography, tasks, & resilience!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The world's oceans are full of incredible places and species to explore! Learners will share about which ocean they explored, how they got there, something surprising that happened, and a task they had to complete while at sea.

Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project
ELA, Social Studies, Literature, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Projects, Activities
This Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project is a 41-page resource designed for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. as a culminating project after a literature circle or book group experience focused on historical fiction. It can be modified for lower or higher grades as well. Working in literature circle groups or book clubs, students will read a historical fiction novel, analyze its characters, plot, author's craft, and historical time period, and present their findings to a small group. This project introduces students to the genre of historical fiction and helps them understand its importance and significance. By the end of the project, students should have a good understanding of what historical fiction is. Many students enjoy reading historical fiction, especially if they are learning about the period in their History/Social Studies class. In addition, if you teach a Language Arts/History Core or plan with a History/Social Studies partner-teacher, this is an excellent resource for both classes and provides students with a different way to engage with history. Historical fiction is an important genre for students for a several reasons, including making the study of history more engaging and interesting by making history come alive. Students also develop an understanding of how historical periods connect to today. It also provides students opportunities tothink critically about the events and people from the past, analyze and interpret historical events, and understand different perspectives. Lastly, by making the past accessible, historical fiction helps students develop empathy, tolerance, and respect because students learn to see history through the eyes of characters from different time periods and cultures The Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project includes the following: 2 ready-to-use lesson plans: Book Browse an interactive and comprehensive Genre Study Lesson Plan with common core standards, objectives, and learning targets Book Browse worksheet Easy-to-follow Project Directions Note Taking Guide Note-Taking Chart Spoke Diagram worksheet Character Chart worksheet Sensory Imagery Chart worksheet Other Elements Chart worksheet Storyboard Directions worksheet Presentation Directions Rubric for Literature Circle Discussions Daily Accountability for Homework and Classwork form Self-Evaluation of Historical Fiction Literature Circle Group Project Check-off and Grading Other Resources You Might Be Interested In: Book Reports: Autobiography/Biography Genre Study Book Report and Speech Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report and Essay Book Jacket Book Report Character Analysis Essay, Gift for a Character Book Report, and Oral Presentation Historical Fiction Genre Study Book Report Historical Fiction Genre Study Literature Circle Project Poetry Book Report Mini-Reviews Book Report Mystery, Thriller, Horror, and Suspense Genre Study Book Report Narrative Nonfiction Genre Study Book Report Project Poetry Book Report Dystopian.
