Each problem requires students to use their knowledge of factors and multiples, unit prices, and decimal operations. This is a great way to incorporate some simple financial literacy and budgeting into your math program. Two versions are provided: 4th of July and Canada Day: each version has a ready-to-print 3 page worksheet! Questions Included: Students need to figure out how to buy ingredients for 80 hamburgers at the best price. They will need to determine ways to make 80 using packs of 8, 12, 20, and 25. They will need to calculate the better unit prices. They think of ways a teacher could spend $20 to get some treats for her class with 24 students. There are inexpensive items like lollypops and pricier options like pop-its. Students should choose two different combinations of items. Finally, they determine how much a town would need to spend on fireworks and flags for their celebration. COMPLETE ANSWER KEY INCLUDED Grades to Use With: These activities could be used in grades 4-7 or in high school special education classrooms. In grades 4 and 5, you might do one problem together as a class, and then allow students to work in small groups to solve the other two. Here is the breakdown of the scenario students will be prompted with: All the kids in our class wore flip flops last Friday. There were so many stubbed toes that our teacher called the day a ‘fiasco’! At the end of the day, our teacher sat down to find out just how many bandages she’d used from her box, which had 1,000 bandages in it at the beginning of the day. Using the following information, the attached work-mat, and your mathematical genius, can you figure out how many bandages our teacher used and how many are left in her box? o Our class usually has 26 students but 3 were absent. o During first recess, the following fiascos occurred… 1. 12 students stubbed two of their toes. 2. 8 students stubbed three. 3. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o During second recess, things got really bad… 1. 9 students stubbed 3 of their toes. 2. 7 students stubbed four. 3. 5 students stubbed all the toes on their left feet. 4. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o And last recess was the worst… 1. 6 students stubbed all the toes on their right feet. 2. 8 students stubbed 7 of their toes. 3. This guided lesson includes: - Information about registered retirement accounts (RRSPs) in Canada and 401ks and IRAs in the USA in simple, easy-to-understand language - An example of how to calculate tax savings when investing in registered accounts in countries that use progressive tax rates - Four scenarios of increasing difficulty for students to work on independently or in pairs (answer key included) - Follow-up written questions to help students think more deeply about the pros and cons of registered savings accounts Grades: This lesson is appropriate for high school classes, life skills classes, and adult education. It requires students to have an understanding of percent written in decimal form. For example, finding 26% of $12,000 by multiplying 12,000 by 0.26 How to Use: Use the first page as a lesson for your students. Teach them about registered accounts in Canada and the US, why the government encourages them, and what benefits they have. This is where you can introduce the idea of tax refunds. People pay income taxes all year based on their earnings, but if they can reduce their income through deductions (for example by investing in a registered account) they will get some of that tax money they already paid back. This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

Make sure to be specific and include all of the taxes and fees in each category too. Grades to Use With: This project is great for the middle grades (5-8) when students are learning about decimal operations, percentages, time zones, and basic speed calculations ( unit rate). It could also work well in a high school special education classroom. Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS6.RP.A.3d Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities. CCSSMP4 Model with mathematics. Mathematically proficient students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. In early grades, this might be as simple as writing an addition equation to describe a situation. In middle grades, a student might apply proportional reasoning to plan a school event or analyze a problem in the community.
