Guided Reading Level K - The Life of a Butterfly (with Lesson Plan)
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Language Development, Insects, Life Sciences, Science, Vocabulary, Grade 1, 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments
This Guided Reading Book - The Life of a Butterfly (Level K) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: The Life of a Butterfly Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Life Science Primary Topic: Butterfly life cycle from egg to adult Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): K What This Book Teaches Best Explains the butterfly’s life cycle in order, beginning with a tiny egg and ending with an adult butterfly ready to fly. Describes what happens when the butterfly comes out, including how its wings change as they dry and become strong. Connects the butterfly’s feeding to plants by explaining it drinks nectar and helps flowers grow. Learning Goals Students can describe where the butterfly’s life begins, using details from the text. Students can explain why a caterpillar must shed its skin, according to the book. Students can describe what a chrysalis is and what happens inside it, using text details. Students can retell key events from the egg stage through the butterfly flying, in the correct order. Students can describe what the butterfly does to make its wings expand, dry, and become strong. Why does the caterpillar have to shed its skin, according to the text? What does the butterfly do while it waits for its wings to become strong? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Amistad (1997): Complete Movie Guide & Key Facts
Social Studies, History, History: African, History: USA, Grade 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Amistad is a historical drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1997. Here are some facts about the movie: "Amistad" is based on the true story of the 1839 mutiny aboard the slave ship La Amistad and the subsequent legal battles that took place in the United States. The film follows the journey of the African captives who revolt against their captors, are captured by the American Navy, and eventually stand trial for their freedom. Historical Background: The real-life events portrayed in the film took place in 1839. The La Amistad, a Spanish ship, was transporting a group of Africans who had been kidnapped and sold into slavery. The slaves rebelled, taking control of the ship, but were later captured by the U.S. Navy off the coast of Long Island, New York. Cast: The film features a star-studded cast, including Djimon Hounsou as Sengbe Pieh (known as Joseph Cinqué), Morgan Freeman as Theodore Joadson, Matthew McConaughey as Roger Baldwin, Anthony Hopkins as John Quincy Adams, and Nigel Hawthorne as President Martin Van Buren. Legal Battle: Following the capture of the Amistad slaves, a legal battle ensued over their status. The case eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where former President John Quincy Adams argued on behalf of the Africans. The court's ruling declared that the Africans were illegally enslaved and should be returned to Africa. Critical Reception: "Amistad" received generally positive reviews from critics. The performances of the cast, particularly Djimon Hounsou, were widely praised. However, some critics felt that the film was overly long and focused too much on the legal proceedings rather than the personal stories of the characters. Historical Accuracy: While "Amistad" is based on true events, some liberties were taken for dramatic purposes. The film has been criticized for certain historical inaccuracies, including the portrayal of John Quincy Adams as the driving force behind the legal battle when, in reality, he played a more limited role. Cultural Impact: "Amistad" brought attention to the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and highlighted the resilience and bravery of the Africans who fought for their freedom. The film contributed to raising awareness about this dark chapter in history. Amistad remains an important film that explores themes of justice, human rights, and the enduring spirit of those who fought against the injustices of slavery. This 20-question movie guide will help your students stay focused during this amazing and powerful movie. This product comes with a completed teacher key. Ready to print and use - no prep needed.

Grade 6 McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders Words to Know COMPLETE SET
ELA, Language Development, Vocabulary, Grade 6, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Practicing Wonders Words to Know is often a bit of a boring task for most students. That's why we made it a bit more fun. First of all, you can guide students through the book along with the vocabulary list. Here it shows the part of speech, the word, the definition and an example sentence. This way, students don't even need their books anymore to practice all of the words at home. Another fun element is the word search. This word search is based on the definitions, so the student is not given the correct answer right away. This way, they really have to dig into their memories to come up with the correct answer. After all of the practicing is done, it is time to do the test. You can present this by first giving the definition and then to let the student fill out the correct answer. The second part is a fill in the blanks exercise.
