An American Tail (1986): Complete Movie Guide & Historical Connections

The film follows the story of a young mouse named Fievel Mousekewitz, who emigrates with his family from Russia to the United States in the late 1800s in search of a better life. The Mousekewitz family, including Fievel, his parents, and his older sister, Tanya, set sail for America, but during the journey, Fievel is separated from his family and ends up arriving in New York City on his own. He soon learns that life in America is not as easy as he thought it would be, as he encounters danger in the form of alley cats and greedy humans who seek to take advantage of the immigrant mice. Fievel meets new friends along the way, including a streetwise mouse named Tony Toponi and a kind-hearted pigeon named Henri. Together, they embark on a journey to reunite Fievel with his family and help put an end to the threats facing the immigrant mice. The film is filled with memorable musical numbers, including the iconic song "Somewhere Out There," sung by Fievel and his sister, which becomes a symbol of hope and connection for the separated siblings. In the end, Fievel is reunited with his family and together they fight against the corrupt humans and cats. Students will explore and discover what a lightyear is with this What is a Lightyear? Activity . Teacher Instructions: The unit of astronomical distance, light-years, can be a difficult but essential concept for students to comprehend. This activity will get your students moving and, hopefully, help them understand what a light-year is. Step One: Give your definition of light-years to your students and explain why this is important for them to understand. I like to tell my students that Proxima Centauri is our nearest star, and it is 154.243 light years away. Let’s pretend we have a friend on Proxima Centauri right now. If we went outside and waved to him, when would he see us waving? He would not see us waving until 4.243 years from now. that is because it takes light 4.243 years to reach him. Step Two: Make copies of the table attached and hand out to your students. Clear some room in your class or go outside. Line your students up and tell them to run for one second. Have them look at how far they traveled and tell them that that is considered their run-second. Have them line up again and tell them to start running. Time them running for one minute. Have them measure the distance they traveled. Tell them to record the distance on their recording table next to “my run minute.” Bring them back into class and instruct them to figure out their run-week, run-month, and run-year. Conclude by telling your students that their run-year is how far they would travel in one year. A light-year is how far light travels in one year.

Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse

Here's a deceptively simple dice game to practice identifying and creating six kinds of triangles. Three are classified by their angles: acute, right, and obtuse. Three are classified by their side lengths: scalene, equilateral, and isosceles. Use this game to reinforce the definitions of each of these six triangles in a geometry/measurement unit. Students work independently or in small groups. Each player needs two dice. They roll them and use the two numbers as side lengths in centimetres for a triangle. They draw the triangle in one of the boxes on their paper and measure and label the third side length. Here's where the strategy and critical thinking come in. Can students make six kinds of triangles in less than six turns? Maybe! If they get some lucky rolls! For example, if a student gets a roll with two of the same numbers, they should make an isosceles or equilateral triangle (depending on what angles they draw). But this triangle will also be an acute triangle (or an isosceles right triangle). Clever students (with lucky rolls) should be able to complete the task in less than six turns. Standards: CCSS 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. CCSS 7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle. Grades: This game works well in classes from grades 4-7. Ideally students know how to use a ruler and a protractor. Teach your students about the cathedrals of the Middle Ages with this engaging activity. LESSON GOAL Students understand the role that cathedrals played in the religious life of people during the Middle Ages. Sections in the reading texts include information on pilgrimages, the architecture of cathedrals, religious art, and relics. TEXT EXAMPLE "During the Middle Ages, local churches played a very important role not only in people’s religious, but also their daily lives. In most places people were actually required to go to church on Sundays by law. Those who refused could be fined or even imprisoned. Churches also provided baptism for newborn babies, marriages, and funerals. Merchants and traders often held markets around churches, paying a fee to do so. Christians during the Middle Ages were also encouraged to go on pilgrimages – religious journeys – to famous holy places. Many people travelled as far as the Holy Land to visit Jerusalem – the place where they believed Jesus had been crucified and then had risen from the dead. Other popular pilgrimage destinations included Rome – where many early Christian leaders had lived and died – and the Spanish city of Compostela." PROJECTS After completing their research, students are asked to create a poster advertising a cathedral and the different attractions it would have for visitors.
