Alliance System Game – WWI Alliances Activity

This is an Alliance System Game for World War I. National Curriculum Standard: Learners will be able to describe and explain conditions and motivations that contribute to conflict, cooperation, and interdependence among groups, societies, and nations. Specific Objective: To understand how the Alliance System led to World War I. Materials: Alliance System Activity Worksheet Procedure: You may want to start the lecture on World War I by explaining some of the more general reasons why it happened, such as the rise of imperialism, the industrial revolution, nationalism, and even militarism. Then explain how the competition between European powers and their need for protection led to the formation of certain alliances, the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. Then explain how even though the main alliances were explicit, some of the smaller alliances were not. Tell the students they will see how having unclear or secretive alliances is eventually going to lead to WWI. Then get the activity started. Distribute the worksheet below and explain all the rules listed on it. You may want to read it together with them and explain the rules. Feel free to delete or add more countries depending on your class size. Depending on class size also, assign countries to pairs or individuals. One thing you want to emphasize about the rules is that they have to choose their alliance very carefully. Weakest nations may not want to ask most powerful nations because their likelihood of rejection is very high. After the activity is over, ask students how the alliance system led to WWI. Then you may want to continue the lecture explaining how a small event such as the assassination of Franz Ferdinand led to WWI. (When Austria declared war on Serbia, it wasn’t altogether clear that Russia would get involved precisely because the alliances were not that clear. As you continue the lecture, also let students know that when Germany passed through the little country of Belgium they may not have anticipated Great Britain to get involved. That’s why Woodrow Wilson proposed “No more secret alliances” as part of his Fourteen Points later.)

Slope Race Partner Activity

This is a Slope Race Partner Activity . This activity will give your students practice with finding slope and it requires them to use their expressive and receptive language skills to share information with a partner. There are 4 problems for students to complete. Step One: Break your class up into pairs. (I like to partner students who have more mastery over slope with students who are struggling.) Hand out blank race packets to the students and explain to them that they will need to work as a team to win the race. Step Two: Once the first team finishes, check their answers but encourage the other teams to keep going for 2nd and 3rd place. You could also vary this activity by setting a timer and having students race against the clock. The first team that finishes with correct answers before the time ends are the winners. This makes a great review activity at the end of the math unit . An answer key is included. I hope you enjoy! Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. The presentation will give students the opportunity to define behaviors usually categorized as medically “abnormal” in American culture in order to better understand cultural definitions of psychological disorders. The Defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588), an engaging skit!

I enjoy actively involving my students in the classroom, and what better way to achieve this than by reenacting history? This skit brings the dramatic events of the summer of 1588 to life, emphasizing the significance of England’s victory over the Spanish Armada in the English Channel. There are plenty of roles available for students, including options for those who may be hesitant to participate. Less enthusiastic performers can portray English sailors or soldiers who cheer on Queen Elizabeth. For added fun, they can toss “paper balls” at one another, representing Spanish troops, during the Battle of Gravelines scene. This keeps the experience both engaging and educational. The skit also includes a portion of Queen Elizabeth I’s famous speech delivered at the height of the battle. Most importantly, it concludes with a review of why this moment was pivotal: Spain’s dominance began to fade while England rose in power. Additionally, Spain would no longer be able to prevent English colonization efforts in North America, with Jamestown being founded within two decades. I use this skit to enrich my lesson on "The English Come to North America," helping students connect with the historical roots of England’s presence in the New World. Lasting about 10–15 minutes, it’s a lively and effective addition to the curriculum.
