Oral Blending Picture Cards and Activities

Here are three simple activities with supporting picture cards to help a child to learn to blend orally. Blending sounds orally can be a helpful pre-step to sounding out words in text, for some children who have difficulty hearing sounds in words. Introduction: I wrote them for an 8 yr old child whom I tutor. He has a smattering of phonic knowledge, but having not learned to blend properly is now guessing and unable to read fluently. This is a common problem, but it must not be allowed to persist or the child will not learn to read fluently or will take a very long time to do so. If you are asking the question: "Why can't my child read accurately?" or "Why does my child guess words?" the answer is: because s/he had not learned to blend. The ability to blend is a vital foundation for all further phonic work. without it, a child will struggle to learn to read. Objectives: These activities will help a child to both oral segment words to separate the sounds in each word and blend them to put them back together to me a word. The words chosen for these activities are not written down, so no actual reading is required, for we are training the child to hear sounds in words, and we do not want the child to memorise the patterns of letters in words before she/he is able to understand the relationship between letters and sounds as we hear them in words. What is included? 3 suggested activities 48 large picture cards in colour: 24 mixed sounds, 24 CVC words 48 small picture cards in colour and black and white: 24 mixed sounds, 24 CVC words Various baseboards Although these activities are most useful when a child is first beginning to blend CVC words, the words themselves contain other sounds that will most probably/may not yet have been taught. This is not a problem as the child will not see the word written down and will not be required to sound out any actual written words. These activities are listening activities. This is a deliberate act to limit the amount of exposure a child has to seeing CVC words, before working on blending with him/her, further limiting the possibility that a child will memorise the words before learning to blend. More You can use the material to make games of your own. Grades/ages Although these activities can be used with young children who are just beginning to blend they are most suited to reading intervention work with older children.

a-e Phonic Game: 'E' or no 'E'? Print 'n Play!

Here is a simple, fun, print n' play phonic game to help children learn the split digraph a-e. Your pupils will learn in no time with this easy-to-play game! This is a game for 2 players. The pack included both colour and black and white versions. Laminate the colour version for durability and sen the black and white version home for extra practice. Who can use the a-e phonic Game? Teachers, Parents home-educators Private Tutors Anyone who needs it! Aim of the game: ·To demonstrate how the short vowel sound /a/ changes when ‘e’ is added to make /ae/. ·To give the child plenty of practice recognising the difference between /a/ words and /ae/ words. How to play: Place the picture/word cards in a pile and put the ‘e’ cards neatly on the table. Players take turns to take a spot card from the feely bag. A green spot means that the player should take the topmost picture/word card from the pile and place it in front of him/her. S/he must then decide (by reading the word, sounding out if necessary) whether or not this word requires an ‘e’ or not to change the /a/ to /ae/. If needed the ‘e’ should be added and the card set aside by the player. If not, the word should be placed likewise. Should a red spot be picked, the player must miss a turn. The winner is the player with the most completed cards when al the cards have been used up. Should a player add an ‘e’ when it is not needed, or fail to add one when it is needed should/would/could lose the card, should the teacher deem it helpful to the child. In some cases, the teacher may allow the child help and let the child keep the card once corrected. This is at the teacher's discretion bearing in mind the needs of each child. Teaching tips: This game provides the opportunity for the pupil and teacher to see just where there are problems - listen out for the ‘messages’ in a pupil’s hesitation, his/her misreading of a word so that it does not describe the picture, or thoughtlessness in studying the word and picture carefully to decide about the need, or not, of the ‘e’. These are all indicators of understanding. discipline is required too as the pupil realises that letters in words and spelling are important. For many pupils, this is a new discovery. ‘Look what you have done to ‘hat’! You have changed it into ‘hate’ by putting ‘e’ on the end! This states the problem and for many pupils is the key to sorting out whether an ‘e’ is needed or not. Included: 1 PDF file with 1 game in both colour and black and white.

Are you looking for fun activities for practicing number recognition? These pixel art worksheets are perfect for getting your students to practice number identification for the numbers 0-2! Different options for how to use this resource: Cut and paste You can choose to print the colour square pages on white paper. -This is the simplest option, but it will take a lot of colour ink. Or you can choose to print the black line squares pages on colour paper. -This will use a lot less ink, but it will take a little more work to prepare. -You may struggle to find colour paper in all the colours I have used. If you have a problem finding the right colours, you can generally substitute a different colour if you need to. Simply look at the answer key to see what the pictures are and choose an appropriate substitute colour. Colour by number You will only need to print the worksheets and allow the students to colour the squares themselves. Preparation: Worksheets 3 printing options: 1. Full colour - best if you will be able to use all the same colours that I have used. 2. Partial colour – I have left the colours blank. You will need to tell your students what colours to use for each number before they can start the activity . This is best if you need to make some substitutions because you are printing on colour paper and cannot find all the correct colours. 3. Black and white - like with the partial colour version, you will need to tell your students what colours to use for each number before they can start the activity . Each page will have information telling you what picture it is meant for. Simply give each student a block with the different colour squares along with their worksheet) 2. This is a pack of 8 AR spelling puzzles. How do the AR spelling puzzles help with phonics? Some children have difficulty understanding that two letters can make one sound. As the letters AR are on one part of the picture card - together - the physical manipulation of one piece of the puzzle, with two letters and one sound helps the child to understand. Who are they for? Any child needing help to hear the letters AR as one sound in words. They can be used in the Early Years (Pre-K and K) or for Early intervention, or for Special Needs. Instructions (included in the download): Puzzle Type 1: Cut around the whole of each mini puzzle (4 per page) and then cut each picture into its divisions. To play: ·The child chooses any card. S/he must the find the remaining part/s of the picture to fit together to complete each word. ·As the child does this the teacher should draw the child’s attention to the letters on each card. Ask questions such as: ‘What does ‘farm’ begin with? ‘So ‘f’ comes first’. ‘What sound can you hear next? f-ar?’ ‘Can you find the piece with ‘ar’?’ ‘What sound does ‘farm’ end with?’ ‘Can you find the last piece with ‘m’?’ ·Once each picture is formed, the child should then sound out the word, moving each piece to the right as it is sounded. Emphasise the saying of one sound ‘ar’ for the letters ‘ar’ together. Puzzle Type 2: These puzzles should be completed after Puzzle Type 1. They consolidate learning. Cut each picture puzzle out. Cut out the separate letter cards. To Play: The child chooses a picture. The child sounds out the word: s-t-ar; c-ar; f-ar-m; sh-ar-k; b-ar-n; d-ar-t; c-ar-d; ar-m; c-ar-t; p-ar-k. The child then finds the letter cards needed to spell each word, placing them in the boxes under each card. Ask questions as the child works as for Puzzle Type 1.
