SEL Boom Deck-What Can I Control and Not Control? Audio and Handout!

In this SEL Boom Deck, students will learn about things they can and cannot control. This is an important skill in self-regulation, relationship skills, and self-awareness. There is audio for each card so reading is not required. There are 46 Boom cards and 43 are task cards. The first 3 cards go over the concepts and the directions. Some of the in control examples are; a child is bored in class, a child make a choice that got them late for school, a child raised his hand to ask for help, a child studied for a test and did well on it, a child took something after someone dared them too, and many more. Some examples for the out of control concept are; a child's balloon was popped from a tree branch, there was a thunder storm, a family is moving, a child is walking in the rain, a child got a toy grabbed by another class member, a child is stuck in traffic and worried they will be late, a child did not get the lead role in a play, and more. After students participate in the Boom deck, they can write and draw their own examples of things they can and cannot control. There is a also a cute airplane that students can color and draw themselves being the pilot of their own plane (and mood, actions, feelings, etc.) This Boom deck can be something students do whole group (there enough cards for each student to do an example) or in centers , or you could assign this individually for homework. If there is an example of someone caught in a situation that causes them to feel upset regardless of whether they can or cannot control it, students are prompted by another card to help the person in the example feel better and do some things that they can control to help themselves. In this SEL product, you will get SEL Flashcards for Social Emotional Learning. You will also get SEL coloring pages because there are two different pages of emotions/feelings. Both pages have a black and white version and a color version. The black and white version allows your students to color their own faces and images. The emotions listed are; happy, sad, silly, proud, shy confused, scared, excited, angry, tired, loving, sick, disgusted, cry, jealous, disappointed. These flashcards can be used for so many purposes. I have used these flashcards for Go Fish games where the students have to ask for a certain feeling. You will need to make two copies of the colored emotions poster to make this game work. If a student asks for "angry" and the student they asked has it, that student give the card to the one who asked and that student places the match down on the table and names a time they felt angry. I have also used this resource for memory games. You would, again, make two copies of each emotion. Then you would mix up the cards and place them face down (I would highly recommend cardstock) in a random order. Students then would choose two cards and reveal the emotion cards. If they are a match, then the student can share when they have felt that way. If it is not a match, they would place the cards face down again the the next student would take a turn. This is a fun and interactive game but also helps students discuss their feelings in a non-threatening way. This resource can be used as a whole class activity where students color their flashcards and then cut them out. They can randomly pick a card and name a time they felt that way. This can also be used as a center activity for Go Fish or Memory (as I described above). The ways to use these Emotion SEL Flashcards are endless!

Follow these steps to create your activity book: Download and print all pages of the activity book. Do not cut the first two pages of the document. Page 1 is a visual guide for the activity, and Page 2 is the title page of the book. These should be laminated along with the rest of the pages. Laminate all pages of the activity book to make them durable and long-lasting. You can use a laminating machine or visit a local print shop for lamination. Cut out all pages along the dotted lines, but be careful not to cut the front and back pages of the book. Cut out all individual squares and attach velcro to the areas where symbols for velcro are indicated. This will allow kids to stick and remove the squares from the book. CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: O and U

Here is a simple game to help children learn to read CVC words with the medial sounds O and U. This game will help your child to learn to blend three-letter words with the short vowels ‘o’ and 'u'. That means, to put sounds together to make a word. The child has to be able to feel and hear the word that is being sounded out. This game is supplied in both colour and black and white - you choose how you print! We suggest laminating the pieces for durability. Who is the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: O and U? Those who are just beginning to sound out/blend CVC words with the O and U short vowel sounds. These may be: Young learners Special needs learners ESL/EFL learners of any age. Who can use the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: O and U? Parents Homeschoolers/home educators Teachers in class, or for use in centers Those involved in intervention work Private tutors How can the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: O and U be used? It can be played as a game for 2 players It can be used as a matching activity for individual pupils - great for centers! It can be used for assessment purposes The game pages can even be used as worksheets - you choose! To make the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: O and U Simply print out the two baseboards. Print out the word cards and cut them up. Teach your pupil to take care of the cards and not bend them more than can be helped. To play the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: O and U Take a baseboard each. Scatter the word cards face down. Take it in turns to take a word card. Read it. If it matches a picture on your baseboard, place it in the correct space. If not, return it to the pool of cards. Play continues until someone completes their board, or until all the cards are used up. Teaching tips: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your turn and invite your pupil’s help when it is your turn, so s/he gets even more practice. Your pupil will need a lot of blending practice so be patient. If your pupil has difficulty sounding out these words then spend more time practicing blending before playing the game again. This o or oo? Phonic Game is a listening game to help the child to hear the ‘oo’ sound in words, as different to the ‘o’ sound as some children have difficulty hearing the new ‘oo’ sound. This is a simple oral game for 2 players to help to develop the ability to hear the sounds as separate in words without the need to worry about text yet. No die needed. These children may have auditory processing difficulties, of which there are growing numbers of children. With the recognition of the needs of these children and timely intervention, many can survive school. Sadly without it, they may soon fall behind. If you have a child who cannot hear the graphemes in words easily, then find or make a game to help. This is one such game you can use. Background to why I made this game One of my pupils has a speech delay. When I introduced him to ‘oo’, he tried to sound out the words saying ‘o’ instead of ‘oo’. It was as if ‘oo’ was a foreign sound to him. So, I devised this game to help him to hear the ‘oo’ sound in words he uses frequently in speech. After playing it a few times he is now happily sounding out to read and spell words with the ‘oo’ sound. This game uses only the ‘oo’ sound as heard in ‘moon’. Who can use the 'o' or 'oo' game? Anyone who is teaching a child who shows difficulty in learning to read words with /oo/, trying instead to say /o/.
