Sorting and grouping involve categorizing objects based on common attributes such as color, shape, size, and function. These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them. This is a color sorting activity for early learners. This activity is simple, engaging and can help children develop their cognitive, motor and social skills. To conduct this activity , you will need two large cards - one red and one blue, and twelve smaller cards - six cards that are blue and six cards that are red. (There are multiple types of color cards to choose from 1) square color cards 2) square color card with the word of the color on the card 3) color word cards. These different smaller cards adds variety and interest to the activity and helps individualize to different learners. Here are the steps for conducting this activity : 1. Start by introducing the two large color cards to the children and ask them to identify the colors. 2. Then, show them the smaller cards and ask them to identify the colors of these cards as well. 3. Explain to the children that they need to sort the smaller cards onto the larger color cards based on their colors. 4. This downloadable PDF is an educational activity that involves sorting non-identical cars by color. Why we teach sorting and grouping - Sorting and grouping are important skills for young children to learn because they lay the foundation for many other important academic and life skills. Sorting and grouping involve categorizing objects based on common attributes such as color, shape, size, and function. These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them. Here's an example of how you might carry out the activity sorting non-identical cars by color: 1) Gather materials: Start with two large car color sorting cards Ex. one blue and one red and twelve smaller cards with different red and blue cars on them. Six of the cards should have blue cars on them and six should have red cars on them. 2) Introduce the activity : Show the learners the two large car color cards and explain that you will be sorting the smaller cards by color of the car. Encourage them to notice the difference between the two cars. Even though the cars are different the task is to sort by color 3) Demonstrate the sorting process: Often times when I am introducing a new activity I will begin by sorting one or two of the cards myself, explaining what I am doing along the way. For example, "This card has a blue car on it, so it goes with the blue card." or "This card has a red car on it, so it goes with the red card. 4) Provide practice opportunities: Give each learner a set of the small cards and ask them to sort them by color and shape. Provide guidance and support as needed, and encourage learners to use descriptive language as they sort the cards. 5) reinforce learning: Once all of the learners have sorted their cards, review the activity as a group. Ask learners to describe their sorting process and to explain why they sorted certain cards in certain ways. Reinforce! By using hands-on activities like this, learners can develop their sorting skills while also improving their language, fine motor, and visual discrimination abilities. This is an activity grouping sorting book where the learner will sort non-identical cars by color. The design is clean and simple with limited visual distraction so the learner can focus on just task. It is also easy to create. Print and cut- cut once. Fall Alphabet Match Game Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Center Spot It Style Cards for Early Literacy This fall-themed alphabet game is a playful way for students to practice uppercase and lowercase letters. The activity is based on a “find the match” system: each card has exactly one letter in common with another card, and students have to be the first to spot it. I have used this kind of game format with kindergarten and first grade, and it usually gets the whole group involved quickly. The set includes 93 cards in total, divided into three different versions of 31 cards each. There are round cards, hexagons, and squares. I usually prepare the square version when I need something quick to cut, but the round cards feel more like a traditional game and always catch students’ attention. The hexagons are a nice option if you want a different look. Each card shows six pictures, with the letters hidden among them, so students have to focus closely to find the match. This type of activity works well for building letter recognition, both uppercase and lowercase. It also helps with visual perception, concentration, and taking turns in a group setting. In my classroom, I sometimes keep the game in a literacy center, and other times I use it as a quick warm-up before a reading lesson. It is flexible enough to use in small groups, partner work, or even as an early finisher option. The set also comes with tally sheets, which give students an extra chance to record their letters and practice writing. Some of my students liked keeping track of their matches this way, which turned the game into a mix of play and writing practice. Preparation is simple: print the cards, cut them apart, and laminate if you want them to last longer. Once made, they store easily in a small envelope or box and can be used again each fall. This resource is designed for kindergarten and the early grades, but older students sometimes enjoy it as a quick challenge too. Mastering the ability to sequence events in chronological order is an essential early reading skill.
