All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound, will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two or three players, one of whom should be an adult. The game can be played with either pictures or sounds. Each player takes a game board (either pictures or sounds) which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The adult reads a word on the word card, and the pupils must listen for 'e' or no 'e'? If the pupil has the sound/ picture on his/her board, she/he covers up a space. the winner fills hi/her board first. Teaching tips: Help children to hear the vowel sound by emphasising it and stretching it out. Help the child to do this as well. Have fun - as this eases children over those tricky spots! Playing the Game After the titles and information about the game, the first game will begin. Students will be shown a close-up photo of an object and have to guess what it is. Press the = button for the answer and the original photo with word will appear. Press the arrow button to move onto the next question. 6 questions in total. Second game is a memory game. Starting with three pictures and ending up with six, students have ten seconds to observe the pictures on the screen, then need to say the words they remember. The picture page will automatically move on after ten seconds but if you wish to move on yourself quicker then there is an arrow button. In the answer screen, answers will flash if correct, dim if incorrect. Finally game is more like a question and answer, but in two parts. This game will help your children to learn to hear the sounds ‘ar’ and ‘or’ in words and to read words containing these sounds. This game is black and white for eco-printing at home, or to send home. A colour version can be found in the Lilibette's Resources store. Who is it for: Children who are learning the digraphs ar and or. Those children working in Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds Those children working in Speed Set 2 of RWI. Who can use the ar/or game? Teachers, parents, private tutors - anyone who needs it! How to make the game Print out pages 4 to 9, on card. Cut out the picture cards (pages 6 - 8). Cut up the ar/or cards (page 9). Write ‘ar’ on the back of one baseboard (pages 4/5) and ‘or’ on the back of the other. Write ‘ar’ or ‘or’ as appropriate on the backs of the picture cards. Find a bag or small box to put the small letter ar/or cards in. How to play the game This is a game for 2 players. It is best if an adult plays with each child individually first and then when each child in a pair is confident, they can play in together. The game can be played with the picture and word cards alone, without the ar/or cards - as a simple matching game. This is how it has been designed to be played: Take a baseboard each. This will decide who is collecting ‘ar’ pictures and ‘or’ pictures. Choose 6 ar and 6 or cards (you can choose different pictures each time you play). Scatter the picture cards picture side up. Take it in turns to take an ‘ar’/’or’ letter card from the bag/box. If the player with the ‘ar’ baseboards picks an ‘ar’ card, s/he may choose a picture with the ar sound in. Likewise with ‘or’. Players may only turn the picture card over to check that they are correct. If not, the picture card is replaced. The winner is the first to fill his/her card. Do: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your go and invite your pupil’s help, so they get even more practice. Look at the cards that are left. What sound do they have in them? Playing the Game After the front slide the game begins. First rounds are easier with less pictures. Later rounds are harder with up to 9 pictures at the end. Teams will take it in turns to answer. Gameplay Taking round 1 as an example. Three pictures are shown. After 10-15 seconds they will disappear. Students are to try and follow at least one of these pictures. Click the go button to begin. The three pictures will mix between themselves and end in a different position. Team A goes first. Anybody in the team can answer. Say the number and then the word. Click on the card to see if the answer is correct - 1 point per correct answer. After Team A have answered. Offer the chance for Team B and subsequently C, D etc in order. to answer. Attempt to get all of the cards answered before moving on. Click on the arrow to continue to round 2 . If you ever need to replay a round, you can press the refresh button on the left side. As the game goes on, you may want to change the rules by allocating 2 words for each team to follow with bonus points if they can answer any other words. I am looking for a geometry center that my students will really want to play with. Learning about shapes can be the part of our math time with this Feed the Monster sorting activity. This activity has been tried out in classrooms and it helps young students learn about 2D and 3D shapes by playing with them. Why I will like this geometry activity: My students will like it: This game has been played many times in classrooms and it is always a success. My students will be just as excited to play with the Monster the time as they were the first time. My students will learn about shapes: It includes 28 different shapes so my students can see many examples of shapes. It has two monsters: One monster is for shapes and one is for solid shapes so my students can see the difference between them. It helps with hand-eye coordination: When my students put the shapes in the monsters mouths they are also practicing their hand-eye coordination. What is in the PDF: Two cute monsters: Big colorful pictures of the 2D. 3D Shape Monsters. 28 shape cards: different shapes like squares and circles and triangles and more. Instructions for teachers: Easy to follow guide to set it up. This activity is great for settings: Math centers: It is easy to add to our weekly math activities. Morning work: My students can start learning soon as they get to class. Small group work: I can use it to help students who are having trouble with geometry. In the first round, click on the numbers in order to reveal clues. There is no in-built points system giving the teacher full control over how you wish to grade the game. Clues range in difficulty with the majority of first clues harder and the last clue making it easier to guess. Press the box to reveal the final picture (the word itself). The reveal box can be done at the end if you wish to reveal the letters bellow first; the word is spelled in the boxes at the bottom, click on each box to reveal a letter. Round two offers a similar style but clues are in picture format. There is no reveal box but letters at the bottom as in round 1. There are arrows to move to the next slide throughout. About the Game This game offers a chance to practice a range of skills and gives the teacher control over how they want students to answer. Playing the Game On each slide, there are 8 pictures and a clue will appear. Click the correct picture for each clue. Incorrect answers will fade, correct answer will flash and other options fade. About the Game This game will challenge students greatly, using clues to practice short E phonics words. With a range of clues and eye-catching pictures, the pace of the game allows the teacher to control the time to fit their own needs. Eight pictures are on the screen at any one time so the teacher may want to use this time to ask those students not yet participating in the game. Many clues are lengthy so will practice reading sentences. On each slide, there are 8 pictures and a clue will appear. Click the correct picture for each clue.
