Sharecropping Activity – Post-Civil War US History

Sharecropping is an agricultural system that emerged after the American Civil War in the late 19th century. It was prevalent in the southern United States, particularly in the rural areas where the plantation system had previously dominated. Under sharecropping, landowners would allow farmers, typically former slaves or poor white farmers, to work their land in exchange for a share of the crops produced. The landowner would provide the necessary land, seeds, tools, and sometimes even housing for the sharecroppers. At the end of the harvest, the crops would be divided between the landowner and the sharecropper, with the sharecropper receiving a portion, usually around half, of the crop. Sharecropping was essentially a form of agricultural labor contract. However, it often led to a cycle of poverty and debt for sharecroppers. Since they did not own the land they cultivated, they had limited control over their own economic destiny. They often had to borrow money or supplies from the landowner, creating a system of indebtedness that was difficult to escape. Furthermore, the sharecroppers had little say in the choice of crops or the marketing of their harvest. Landowners would often dictate the type of crops to be grown, which were usually cash crops such as cotton or tobacco. The sharecroppers' lack of control over their economic circumstances and the volatile nature of agricultural markets made it challenging for them to break free from poverty. This historical simulation provides students with a deep understanding behind the system of sharecropping. The main idea behind this simulation is to show students how skewed the relationship between the sharecropper and landowner was after the Civil War. Students will gain an insight into the way sharecroppers paid for debts, and how many of them were forced to work in order to pay off those debts

This Guided Reading Book - All About Cows (Level L) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. This Entrepreneur Fair Mini Unit is completely ready-to-go for your intermediate or middle school classroom. It walks students through the entire process of starting a small business step-by-step. Use it over several weeks, culminating with an Entrepreneur Fair in your classroom where students can buy each other's products and services. This will be the kind of hands-on, applicable learning students don't soon forget! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-7. Print a single page 8 for each student. o What is an Entrepreneur?: Read through as a class and give students time to research entrepreneurs. Decide if students will work independently or in pairs or small groups. o Brainstorming a Product or Service: Support your students as they complete the mind-map to think of a product or service they could sell. Ask questions to get them thinking of ideas. Once they have decided, they complete the page to draw and describe their idea. o Costs to Start a Business: Model a sample product and its costs, then let your students complete this task for their business idea. Encourage them to recycle and reuse items whenever possible: the less they spend, the more profit they can make! o Making the Product: Remind your students about writing instructions. They can include temporal words like first, next, and finally. Then give them class time to make products (some can also be done at home). Decide how much money your students will bring to the fair (and if you will use real money or pretend). I recommend $5. Students need to know this before they can price their item. o Pricing: Give students time to price their product and explain their rationale. o Advertising: Students will create advertisements for their products. You could bring in magazines or show online ads to notice key features: bright, happy, aspirational images with short, catchy phrases and features. You can post the ads around the classroom before the fair. Give students the pretend money (or they bring real money from home) and let them shop for each other’s items. They can make change and keep a tally of sales. o Calculating Profit: Walk students through the profit calculation step-by-step. o Reflection: Finally, give students time to reflect on the entire process.

AN Words Emergent Reader: The Van

With this decodable book, you will practice reading a short story that contains CVC words and simple sight words and color words. Kindergartners and first graders can gain practice reading words that contain the CVC words from the AN word family. What is Included: There is one emergent reader titled "The Van," which includes one cover page and five pages for students to color and read. How to Use: Students will color each page of the book, cut the pages apart, and then assemble the book, making sure the cover page is on top. The subsequent pages can be placed in any order and still be read with meaning. Use a stapler to attach the pages together. The repetitive nature of each page allows students to have success with reading and gives them extra practice with target words! The story and sentences in the book contain simple sight words and words from the word family targeted. This makes them easy for beginning readers to have success with creating and reading each book.
