What You Get: This is an Arithmetic Theme Park Word Problem Activity that was designed for upper elementary students who have learning or are reviewing this skill. This resource is a 12-page printable . How To Implement This Resource: You will print off the word problem “tickets” and the answer “cars” and laminate them. You will also print off enough recording sheets for all students. There are 12 tickets for students to match with the correct ride. Standard: Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. Here’s an engaging 5th grade or 6th grade differentiated problem solving worksheet that includes several real-world math skills: o Conversions of standard measurements: millimetres to centimetres and centimetres to metres (5th Grade Measurement) o Calculating the volume of a rectangular prism that has whole number side lengths (5th Grade Measurement) o Multiplying & dividing by powers of ten (5th Grade Numbers in Base Ten) o Simple financial literacy (comparing prices) o Ratios and Rates (6th Grade Ratios and Proportional Relationships) Students will work on a realistic scenario: measuring boxes of sprinkles made at the sprinkle factory. Some are small for home use, and some are much larger for bakery and industrial applications. They will complete the following tasks for each box: Sketch the sprinkle box shape in 3-D with labelled measurements Complete simple and guided unit conversions on the measurements Calculate the exact volume of each box in centimetres cubed Determine the prices of each box using simple rates. This activity included three levels of difficulty: you can assign differing amounts to easily differentiate for your students, or complete the whole activity as a class, step-by-step. Level 1) Involves converting millimetres to centimetres and calculating the price and volume of the small box of sprinkles. Level 2) Has students convert metres to centimetres and calculate the volume and price of the larger box of sprinkles. Level 3) Students will compare the prices of the different boxes to find out which is a better deal using simple rates. This is an open-ended question, and there are lots of ways for students to solve it. You can have different students share their personal strategies with the rest of the class for further learning. Here is the breakdown of the scenario students will be prompted with: All the kids in our class wore flip flops last Friday. There were so many stubbed toes that our teacher called the day a ‘fiasco’! At the end of the day, our teacher sat down to find out just how many bandages she’d used from her box, which had 1,000 bandages in it at the beginning of the day. Using the following information, the attached work-mat, and your mathematical genius, can you figure out how many bandages our teacher used and how many are left in her box? o Our class usually has 26 students but 3 were absent. o During first recess, the following fiascos occurred… 1. 12 students stubbed two of their toes. 2. 8 students stubbed three. 3. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o During second recess, things got really bad… 1. 9 students stubbed 3 of their toes. 2. 7 students stubbed four. 3. 5 students stubbed all the toes on their left feet. 4. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o And last recess was the worst… 1. 6 students stubbed all the toes on their right feet. 2. 8 students stubbed 7 of their toes. 3. Financial Literacy: Bank Statement and Credit Card Bill Practice Activity A useful teaching resource, this activity is designed to arm students with necessary skills around reconciling bank accounts and managing monthly expenses. Grades to Use With: This lesson is suitable for students in grade 7 through grade 12, depending on your situation. The math skills required are adding and subtracting with money amounts up the the thousands of dollars. How to Use: Students are given a sample VISA bill with entries for one month's spending. They add up their total spending, reflect on if they should pay off the entire bill each month, add up their spending in specific categories (groceries, gas), and transfer their VISA spending to their checking account to pay off the bill. Next, students are given a sample checking account for one month of spending. They must complete a math operation for each entry. Sometimes that involves adding a deposit to the balance, subtracting a withdrawal from the balance, or figuring out a transaction amount based on a given balance. You can do several entries together as a class, and then assign the rest for your students to complete. Finally, students answer questions about the monthly spending as a whole, and they decide if this person has good financial health. A complete answer key is included. This project allows students to apply their knowledge of perimeter, area, volume, and decimal calculations to a realistic and creative situation. They are tasked with designing a new park that includes areas for swimming, playing (skate park, playground, and grass), eating, and walking. They use their knowledge of perimeter when considering the size and shape of their park and the amount of fencing required. Every student is assigned the same perimeter. This constraint ensures your students can accurately calculate perimeter, it makes some of the marking easier for you, and it will help stimulate a discussion about the relationship between perimeter and area. Although all the perimeters are the same, the areas of your students' parks can be vastly different depending on the shape chosen! They use their knowledge of area when dividing the park up into sections for different activities. An understanding of volume is used when considering filling the pool. Finally, they use their knowledge of decimal calculations when determining the final price of the entire project. Each different section has a different cost (unit rate). For example, paths are much cheaper than a playground, and grassy areas cost less than a swimming pool. I asked my students to calculate by hand, but you could allow yours to use a calculator as well. This project requires students to use creative and logical thinking skills, organization, careful calculating methods, and neat drawing/colouring. It is a great project to use as a summative assessment or to show parents at conferences. Grades to Use With: This math project could work in grades 4-8 in regular math classes. It could also be used in high school special education classes.
