The Alien and Sedition Acts 1798: Primary Source Analysis
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
The Alien and Sedition Acts were a series of laws passed by the United States Congress in 1798 during the presidency of John Adams. These acts consisted of four separate laws: the Naturalization Act, the Alien Friends Act, the Alien Enemies Act, and the Sedition Act. They were primarily enacted in response to the perceived threat posed by foreign individuals and the growing political tensions between the Federalist Party and the Democratic-Republican Party. The Alien and Sedition Acts were highly controversial and sparked widespread opposition from the Democratic-Republicans, who viewed them as unconstitutional and an infringement on individual liberties. Many critics argued that these acts were designed to suppress political dissent and silence opposition to the Federalist Party. The acts generated significant political debate and played a role in shaping the contentious presidential election of 1800, in which Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic-Republican, defeated the incumbent President John Adams, a Federalist. After the election, the Democratic-Republicans repealed the Alien and Sedition Acts, deeming them unconstitutional and a threat to civil liberties. The legacy of these acts serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting free speech and the limitations on government power in the United States. In this activity , students are provided with a brief overview of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The students are then given small excerpts of the Alien and Sedition Acts with focus questions. Lastly, students are asked to explain why these acts would be controversial or promote protest - essentially, students are doing the work of historians! This is a great way to bring primary sources into your classroom! This activity is Common-Core Aligned. Ready to print and use! Enjoy! Thumbnail Clipart Credit: By PrincePadania

Don't Stir The Drama Pot-An SEL Presentation Plus SEL Coloring Page
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Social Skills, Creative Arts, Art, Special Education Needs (SEN), Life Skills, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Coloring Pages, Writing Prompts
In this product, you will get a Google Slides lesson with SEL coloring pages and Writing prompts discussing what causes drama among friends, what makes things worse (heats it & stirs it up) and what makes things better (what cools it down). There are 10 situations to discuss as a class. You can have students use fingers (1-5) or move to stations around the room to choose what they would do in different situations. Finally, there is a reflection and a coloring activity to reinforce the importance of being drama-free. This lesson will address friendship skills, relationship skills as well as social awareness. You can use this for whole-classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and even one on one counseling. There are descriptions of what heats up (fuels) drama among friends as well as what de-escalates friendship problems. There is a 19-slide presentation using Google Slides. In the PDF, you just need to click on the image of the main cover image. This is the image of a collection of the slide presentation, the reflection sheet, as well as the mindfulness coloring activity sheet. There are slide notes on every page. Please read each slide note for each slide. This will help you have a seamless lesson with very little prep and no need to prepare for your SEL lesson. The heat-up reasons are; involving other people as messengers, bringing up past situations, gossiping, using mean words, and blaming others. The cooldown strategies are; owning your stuff (taking responsibility for your own actions), sharing your own feelings, sticking to the current situation, listening to the other person's perspective, and calming down before you react. This is a great lesson to use if you are finding students have difficulty solving their own problems among their friendship groups, small groups for girls (in particular), or hosting lunch bunch groups for girls. This is not gender specific so you can use it for both genders if needed.

America Story of Us: Episode 4 - "Division" - Complete Video Guide
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Video overview: Commerce and industry thrive across the new nation, now one of the wealthiest on Earth. The Erie Canal brings big risk and bigger reward. In the South, cotton is king but slavery fuels a growing divide. Violence flares across the territories and abolitionists make a stand for freedom. The election of Lincoln is a harbinger of war. Slavery: The institution of slavery was a central and divisive issue leading up to the Civil War. The Southern states heavily relied on slave labor for their agricultural economy, while the Northern states had gradually abolished slavery. The disagreement over the expansion of slavery into new territories and the moral and economic implications of the institution created significant tensions between the North and the South. States' Rights: The conflict between states' rights and federal authority played a role in the lead-up to the Civil War. Southern states believed in the concept of states' rights, arguing that states had the authority to nullify federal laws or secede from the Union if they deemed it necessary to protect their interests. This clashed with the belief in a strong federal government held by many in the North. Sectionalism: Sectionalism, the division of the country along regional lines, also contributed to the causes of the Civil War. The North and the South had different economies, social structures, and cultural values, leading to increasing tensions and rivalries between the regions. Economic Differences: The North experienced rapid industrialization, urbanization, and a diversified economy, while the South relied heavily on agriculture, particularly cotton production using slave labor. Disagreements over tariffs, trade policies, and economic interests further deepened the divide between the North and the South. Political Climate: Political differences and conflicts over slavery and its expansion into new territories heightened tensions between Northern and Southern politicians. The rise of anti-slavery sentiment and the formation of new political parties, such as the Republican Party, contributed to the growing polarization between the North and the South. Failure of Compromises: Various attempts at compromise, such as the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850, aimed to address the issue of slavery but ultimately failed to resolve the deep-rooted divisions. These failures highlighted the inability to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the contentious issue of slavery. It's important to note that the causes of the Civil War are complex and interconnected, and different historians may emphasize different factors. The issues surrounding slavery and its expansion were undoubtedly central to the conflict, but they were intertwined with broader political, economic, and social tensions that had been building for decades. These teacher-generated questions are designed to help students focus in on key information during the video. These questions cover the fourth episode in the series titled "Division."
