L blends Worksheets Here is a bumper pack of 40 consonant L blend worksheets to teach bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl. Who are these L-Blends Worksheets for? These worksheets are designed for a younger child, or an older child with processing difficulties, both of whom may need less on a page. These worksheets break learning down into small, bite-sized steps to enable very young learners or those with special needs to succeed. These worksheets are based on my 3-step process: see it, sound it out, and write it. By using the hand, we strengthen the links in the brain that help both reading and spelling. Reading and spelling are two sides of the same coin. Together, both are stronger. Order, Outline and Steps Each blend is introduced aurally. To begin with, the child is asked to colour the picture that starts with a given blend. There are 2 differentiated worksheets for each blend. A further set of worksheets asks children to sort words by their initial blend - there are 2 differentiated worksheets for this activity. Another set gives the child practice writing the blend, providing a multisensory component. We then move into reading and spelling words with a consonant blend and a short vowel sound - words like 'plum' and 'clap'. The next section gives further practice playing with blends and endings - word making. We then put the blends words into sentences and further into short paragraphs. We finish with a game. 20 Beginning Sounds Worksheets: Phonemic Awareness Activities This set of 20 fun, Find and Color worksheets for initial blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One sheet for each of the following blends is included in the pack: tw, sw, sk, st, sn, sm, sp bl, cl. fl. gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on each worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheets unaided once they have been instructed, although with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear each consonant blend at the beginning of a word. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as possible, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Learn Initial Sounds L: Lesson 12 teaches the letter Ll and its related phonic sound through a 35-slide PowerPoint lesson, and 5 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter L! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you effectively teach initial/beginning sounds to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Learn Initial Sounds L: Lesson 12 The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. The PowerPoint is editable so that you can make it fit your pupils. Science of Reading Aligned Truly phonetic; no 'i' for 'ice-cream'. We focus heavily on phonemic awareness which is so necessary for a head start in phonics The child is given plenty of opportunities to learn the necessary skills - perfection is not expected in lesson 1. Still, the teacher will look for the development of the necessary skills as the child works through the alphabet. What is included in the Learn Initial Sounds L: Lesson 12? A 35-slide PowerPoint which teaches phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence and letter formation along with practice games 5 follow-up worksheets How can the Learn Initial Sounds L: Lesson 12 be used? It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Ll in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say each letter's sound to the child and ask him/her to repeat it thrice. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. Use the lesson as teacher training for yourself, to see how to teach your child, or use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching your child's ability) from the pack of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only - use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, could you make sure that you focus on the child's hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words as this is much overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible? Learn Initial Sounds E: Lesson 5 teaches the letter Ee and its related phonic sound through a 25-slide PowerPoint lesson and 6 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter E! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you teach initial/beginning sounds effectively to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Learn Initial Sounds E: Lesson 5 The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. Science of Reading Aligned Truly phonetic; no 'i' for 'ice-cream'. We focus heavily on phonemic awareness which is so necessary for a head start in phonics The child is given plenty of opportunities to learn the necessary skills - perfection is not expected in lesson 1 but the teacher will be looking for the development of the necessary skills as the child works through the alphabet. What is included in the Learn Initial Sounds E: Lesson 5? A 26-slide PowerPoint which teaches phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence and letter formation along with practice games 5 follow-up worksheets How can the Learn Initial Sounds E: Lesson 5 be used? It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your own lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Ee in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say the sound each letter represents to the child and ask him/her to repeat it three times. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. Either use the lesson as teacher training for yourself to see how to teach your child, or use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching the ability of your child) from the pak of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only - use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, do make sure that you focus on the hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words as this is much overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible.
