Square Root and Cube Root Mental Math Matching Game Estimating 8th 9th
Math, Algebra, Number Lines, Multiplication and Division, Grade 8, 9, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Here's a fun and hands-on way for your students to practice estimating square roots & cube roots using logical mental math strategies and known benchmarks. It's a simple matching game for students in 8th & 9th grade when they are learning about square roots & cube roots in math class. How to Use: Print a worksheet for each of your students along with a set of 24 matching cards for each group of two to four students. First, students need to complete their Square and Cube Roots Cheat Sheet. Give them time in class to do this in pairs or small groups. They should hold on to this sheet for the whole unit as it will be a useful resource. Let them practice estimating square and cube roots with the five practice questions. Go over mental math strategies as a class (use the answer key for ideas). When it’s time for the game, give groups of students one set of 24 cards. They need to shuffle the cards and match them up. They could do this several ways: Play as a memory matching game : spread cards facedown, flip 2 cards, see if they match, flip them back if they don’t. Play like Go Fish - ask the other players for certain cards. Or just spread all the cards out face-up, match up a pair, and explain why it’s a match . Grades to Use With: This game is designed to target 8th grade math learning outcomes about square roots, cube roots, mental math, and estimation. It could be used in 9th grade as a review activity. It could be used in high school special education classes where appropriate. What's Included: 6-Page PDF Ready to Print and Use! Parallel & Perpendicular Lines: Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Game
Math, Geometry, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games
Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe is a learning game that uses reading, writing, speaking, and listening, all in one activity! It is part of a group of strategies called sheltered language strategies. Sheltered language strategies are teaching strategies that focus on teaching academic vocabulary at the same time as academic content. These types of strategies have been researched and shown to improve student learning, especially for ELLs. When students participate in this activity, they are explicitly required to interact with both academic language and content at the same time. The process of transcription involves listening to verbal input and producing writing based on the information that is heard. Example: Player #1 will say (reading from their Transcription Script) "Write the equation of a line in slope-intercept form that is parallel to the line y=7x +2." Player #2 will listen and then write (recording on their answer sheet) y= 7x + (any number other than 2). HOW TO PREPARE MATERIALS FOR TRANSCRIPTION TIC-TAC-TOE Students work in teams of 2. One person is Player #1 and the other person is Player #2. Step 1:Print the Transcription Script for Player #1 back-to-back with the Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Answer Recording Sheet for Player #1. Do the same for the two documents for Player #2. Each student gets their own copy of each of the two sheets. Step 2: Print copies of the Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Board. Option #1: You will need one copy per team per round. There are enough questions for 3 rounds, so print 3 copies per team. Option #2: Laminate copies of the Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Board and have student teams write on the laminated boards with dry erase markers. You will need one board per team. Option #3: Have students use a white board to play the Tic-Tac-Toe game. Option #4: Have students use a piece of regular notebook or printer paper to draw in their own Tic-Tac-Toe grid. HOW TO PLAY TRANSCRIPTION TIC-TAC-TOE Students work in teams of 2. If there is an odd number of students in your class, consider allowing a group of 3 in which two students share the role of Player #1. Player 1 begins and reads question 1 from their Transcription Script to Player 2. Player 2 listens to the the instructions and writes the answer on their own Answer Recording sheet. Player 2 is allowed to ask Player 1 to repeat the question as many times as is needed and reasonable. Player 1 checks Player 2’s answer using Player 1’s answer key. If Player 2 answered correctly, they get to play first on the Tic-Tac-Toe board by putting an ‘x’ or an ‘o’ in a space of their choosing. If Player 2 answered incorrectly, they lose a turn. Repeat the process with Player 2 now reading question #1 from their Transcription Script to Player 1. The first player to get three x’s or three o’s in a row wins that round. If neither player gets three in a row, that round is considered a tie. Continue switching roles back and forth, playing a new round once the previous round is completed or until all of the questions have been used. If students are able to, they can create their own similar questions and continue playing once they have used all of the questions that are provided.

Squares, Cubes, Square Roots and Cube Roots - I Have Who Has Class Act
, Grade 8, Activities, Games
I Have Who Has is a class activity that is a student favorite. This set contains 36 cards with questions for squares of numbers, cubes of numbers, square roots of numbers and cube roots of numbers. It is a PDF file. I HAVE WHO HAS: PERFECT SQUARES AND CUBES Directions 1. Make a copy of the cards. You will only need one set to reuse for all of your classes. Use color paper and laminate if possible. (I had a set of I Have Who Has that were not laminated, used them for several years, and they held up well.) 2. Have students number 1 -36 on a piece of paper. 3. Mix up the cards and pass them out, one to each student. There are 36 cards so a few students might get two cards depending on your class size. 4. Any student can start with their WHO HAS. The student that has the value equivalent to the WHO HAS statement speaks up and says I HAVE ____ WHO HAS_____. (reading their card) Students will record the answer on their paper whether they have the card or not, trying to beat the person who has the card. Continue in this manner until you return to the starting card and they will then get to say their I HAVE. 5. I suggest having the cubes you don't expect the students to have memorized on the board (such as the cubes of 11 -15). You might even want to have a poster of those permanently on the wall. 6. I always made I HAVE WHO HAS a race for the class. If they could go through the cards in a certain amount of time they all got a piece of candy. I decreased the time allowed, as they got better. All students will have to speak clearly and loudly, listen, and stay focused to get through the cards in a set time. --great skills to practice in and of themselves ***** Make sure to count your cards after taking them back up from students. Even one missing card ruins the activity.********

Math, Fact Families, Multiplication and Division, Division, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games
Here's a quick and easy activity to practice multiplication facts, multiplication strategies, and the commutative property. Full instructions are provided. All students need are 6- or 10-sided dice and scrap paper or a whiteboard! Instructions: Here’s a fun way to practice multiplication facts with a friend. Roll several dice. Your job is to multiply the numbers in as many creative ways as you can. You and your partner take turns thinking of a new way to multiply the numbers. A player gets a point when their partner can not think of another way. Sample Game: Sue and Max are playing the medium level. They roll a 6, a 5, and a 2. Sue: 5x2 = 10x6 = 60 Max: 6x5 = 30x2 = 60 Sue: 6x2 = 12x5 = 60 Max might give up and Sue gets the point. Or, he could get creative and say 6x5 is the same as 5x5+5 = 30x2= 60 Then Sue might give up and Max gets the point. Grades to Use With: This game is a great way to practice multiplication facts in the intermediate and middle school grades (4-9). It could also be used in high school special education or in a grade 2/3 enrichment program. Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. 8th Grade Math Bingo Review #2
, Grade 8, Activities, Games
This file contains 2 bingo games of 8 questions each for 8th grade math review. The topics covered are: distance-rate-time problems. unit price, systems of equatios, slope of aline from its graph, equation, or 2 points, y-intercpt from a graph •Directions for BINGO. • •Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students should put a mark in the corner of the square---Don’t have them completely mark out their answers in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game. •Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. •The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-10 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. •I like to give a piece of candy (like jolly rancher) for BINGOs.

Rock Transformation Vocabulary Hangman Game Learn and review key 7th grade science vocabulary words related to rock transformations with this interactive hangman game. Students will build their knowledge of important terms and definitions while having fun playing the classic hangman game. This 22-slide PowerPoint can be used for individual, small group, or whole class review. First, students study the vocabulary words and meanings. Next, they take turns guessing letters to solve hangman puzzles for each word. If they guess incorrectly, part of the hangman is drawn. The goal is to solve the word before the full hangman is complete. This activity stimulates intelligence, builds concentration, reinforces letter recognition, improves spelling and pronunciation, and expands science vocabulary in an engaging way. It's a perfect supplement for any lesson on the rock cycle or rock transformations. Other Spanish language games and activities available in our TpT store.

In this resource, students will work together to solve Melody's Mystery! Melody is an actress and has lost something at the Golden Globe Award ceremony. Students will need to decide what is missing, who took it and where it is. Students will work together cooperatively and problem solve together to solve this mystery. There are 18 clues to be passed around to a group of students (4-5 students works best) and then they will read out loud each clue. As they read the clues, the group will eliminate the suspects one by one and there is one person who will cross off the ones that are incorrect. Scratch: Sprite Scrolling (Game Mechanics #1)
Science, Technology, Computer Science, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Games, Activities
This guide will show you how to do scrolling for sprites. Scrolling can be a little complicated, but if you read carefully, and understand what is written, then it should be very simple. The same technique is used to make higher level games like 3D and pen platformers. So I thought that scrolling was a good place to start. This package is a great resource to have your students follow. These game mechanic guides are great to teach specific techniques and skills that can be used to create a game. They allow the students to expand their knowledge of Scratch. It is recommended that your students have an understanding of Scratch before using this resource.
