Academic Integrity - Plagiarism, Paraphrasing & Quoting - An introduction PowerPoint teaching resource preview

Academic Integrity - Plagiarism, Paraphrasing & Quoting - An introduction PowerPoint

Academic integrity comes into focus through a slide-by-slide breakdown of plagiarism, paraphrasing, and direct quotation. Students first define plagiarism and talk through four discussion prompts about why and how to avoid it, then move into a close read of a short news passage that gets rewritten three different ways — as a patchwritten near-copy, a properly reworded paraphrase, and a direct quotation — so they can practice telling the three apart and discuss the citations shown alongside a class style guide. Two independent practice passages follow: one on alcohol-related research findings that asks students to write their own paraphrase-plus-quote paragraph, and a second on bicycle helmet safety for additional practice. A closing discussion set addresses common excuses students give for plagiarizing and reviews the core distinctions one more time. A one-page Word handout repeats the alcohol-study and bicycle-helmet passages with answer space; its alcohol-study description is more detailed than the slide version.
