Geometry Project: Park Design with Area, Perimeter, and Volume (with Budgeting!)

Geometry Project: Park Design with Area, Perimeter, and Volume (with Budgeting!)
Math, Decimals, Multiplication and Division, Division, Money, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects

This project allows students to apply their knowledge of perimeter, area, volume, and decimal calculations to a realistic and creative situation. They are tasked with designing a new park that includes areas for swimming, playing (skate park, playground, and grass), eating, and walking. They use their knowledge of perimeter when considering the size and shape of their park and the amount of fencing required. Every student is assigned the same perimeter. This constraint ensures your students can accurately calculate perimeter, it makes some of the marking easier for you, and it will help stimulate a discussion about the relationship between perimeter and area. Although all the perimeters are the same, the areas of your students' parks can be vastly different depending on the shape chosen! They use their knowledge of area when dividing the park up into sections for different activities. An understanding of volume is used when considering filling the pool. Finally, they use their knowledge of decimal calculations when determining the final price of the entire project. Each different section has a different cost (unit rate). For example, paths are much cheaper than a playground, and grassy areas cost less than a swimming pool. I asked my students to calculate by hand, but you could allow yours to use a calculator as well. This project requires students to use creative and logical thinking skills, organization, careful calculating methods, and neat drawing/colouring. It is a great project to use as a summative assessment or to show parents at conferences. Grades to Use With: This math project could work in grades 4-8 in regular math classes. It could also be used in high school special education classes. This lesson is an excellent addition to a pre-algebra unit in grades 6 or 7 to help show students a real-world application of using expressions, tables of values, and graphing to solve a simple, everyday financial literacy decision. Students are tasked with deciding how to pay to visit a new wave pool in the neighbourhood. They can pay a flat monthly fee or pay a smaller fee and then pay a small amount each time they go. The trick will be determining how often they are likely to go each month. Students get to: Analyze a realistic scenario Complete two tables of values Write a pattern rule in words and turn it into an expression with a variable Create a simple line graph to compare the two options visually Explain their decision in words using evidence from their mathematical work This lesson can be used in various ways: it can be used during full-class instruction or smaller group activities. It could be regular classwork, a homework assignment, or even a summative assessment. I liked to have students complete it near the end of our algebra unit to assess skills before the unit test and to have as an artifact for parent-teacher conferences. Fall Number Flashcards – 0–30 Memory and Sequencing Games

Fall Number Flashcards – 0–30 Memory and Sequencing Games
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Special Resources, Special Education Needs (SEN), Seasons, Fall, Math, Early Math, Numbers, Counting, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, Activities, Games, Worksheets & Printables, Quizzes and Tests, Teacher Tools, Quizzes, Projects, Flashcards, Word Problems, Centers

Fall Numbers Memory Game Bring autumn fun into your math lessons! This set of fall-themed flashcards gives students repeated practice with numbers from 0 to 30 in a playful and flexible format. I first made these for my kindergarten class, when many of my students still needed support with recognizing numbers and putting them in the right order. The cards worked well because they could be used in so many different ways without having to prepare something new each time. There are 228 cards in total, divided into six full sets with different colored borders. The colors make it easy to keep groups organized, since each table can use a separate set without mixing the cards together. Each card shows a single number in a large, clear font, which helps beginning learners and also supports students who struggle with visual distractions. The cards can be used for memory or matching games, where students flip over two at a time and try to find pairs. Another favorite activity in my class has been sequencing: students work together to lay the cards out from 0 to 30. For more active lessons, we sometimes spread the cards on the floor and have students “walk” the numbers in order, which adds movement to the practice. I also use the cards as simple flashcards, holding them up for quick recognition drills, or handing one card to each student and asking the group to line up in numerical order. With partners, students have created their own math problems using the numbers they draw, which adds a layer of challenge for more advanced learners. Differentiation is built in, since you can choose how many numbers to include. With beginners, I usually work with 0–10. As students grow more confident, I extend to 0–20 and eventually the full 0–30. Adding a timer or encouraging students to say each number out loud when they play can make the activity even more engaging. Preparation is straightforward: print the set you want, cut the cards, and laminate if you plan to reuse them. I keep each set in small envelopes or bags so they are ready for math centers, group games, or quick warm-ups. The fall design adds a seasonal touch, but the number practice is useful all year long. Life Studies, Finance, Home Economics, Math, Graphing, Money, Fractions, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

Here's an integrated lesson that teaches key financial literacy skills while also allowing students to practice using ratio tables and graphing them. Students get to choose an item they want to save up for that costs between $200-$300. They research the exact price and where they can buy it. Then, they use a ratio table to help calculate the sales tax on that item in their area. Next students complete two ratio tables based on hourly wages they could get for a part-time job. They graph the data from the 2 tables to see that when you are making more money per hour, you can save up for an item faster. This is good practice for plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. After that, students create a new ratio table to see how many weeks they will have to work to save up for their item. Finally, they reflect on what they have learned about ratio tables, graphing, saving up, getting a part-time job, or hourly wages. A complete answer key is included! Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed to target the Common Core State Standards 6.RP.A.3.A and 6.RP.A.3.C It is perfect for a grade 6 classroom, or could be used as review and/or to teach financial literacy in a grade 7 or 8 classroom. It could be used for enrichment in a grade 5 classroom. Finally. it could be used in high school special education classes. Winter Unit Rates Word Problems Digital Escape Room
Math, Fractions, Winter, Seasons, Holiday & Seasonal, Grade 5, 6, 7, Escape Room, Activities, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

If your students struggle with unit rates, this Winter Digital Escape Room will give them the practice they need without the struggle. Rather than slog through another page of word problems, students are placed into a scenario where unit rate problems are a necessary part of bringing back the Frostbite Festival. This allows enough purpose to be added to avoid taking away from the math. Students work through twenty actual-unit-rate word problems set in four escape room winter scenes: The Snack Shack, Skating Trail, Yeti Workshop, and Penguin Performance. Students work with word problems related to cost, distance, time, and quantity from the everyday experience they realize from using unit rates. In order to progress, students must compute the correct answer and type it into the escape room. The escape room is a completely self-contained activity, which means students will not be able to progress with an incorrect answer, making this activity perfect for independent practice. One of the most beneficial aspects of this resource is the low level of work that it generates. There is no prep work that is necessary. You don’t have to set up anything, including logins and passwords and lock screens. You can just send out the link via Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Microsoft Teams, or whatever tool that you are using. They just click and start. This autosave functionality comes in very handy during longer class times or interruptions. So long as students have had the chance to log back into the same computer and browser, they will pick up exactly where they left off. To make it more flexible, a printable version is also included. You will get a worksheet featuring all twenty unit rate problems, a matching version task card set, and finally, a full answer key. This is perfect for math center activities, small-scale intervention groups, or homework. Both the student and teacher instructions are provided and WrittenClearly, so there’s no misunderstanding or guestimation of how to do things. Students know just how to input their answers, and teachers know how to assign and use the autosave function. The skills which will be developed here include the understanding of the interpretation of unit rates, calculating a unit rate from a ratio, and using the rate in practical applications of money, time, distance, and measure problems. A winter unit rate resource that is engaging, organized, and actually easy to implement is not easy to find, but this escape room resource certainly delivers all of these things. Such a resource keeps students on task and provides a reliable no-prep resource for you to implement repeatedly.

The Flip Flop Fiasco is an exciting math activity that your students will enjoy. Here is the breakdown of the scenario students will be prompted with: All the kids in our class wore flip flops last Friday. There were so many stubbed toes that our teacher called the day a ‘fiasco’! At the end of the day, our teacher sat down to find out just how many bandages she’d used from her box, which had 1,000 bandages in it at the beginning of the day. Using the following information, the attached work-mat, and your mathematical genius, can you figure out how many bandages our teacher used and how many are left in her box? o Our class usually has 26 students but 3 were absent. o During first recess, the following fiascos occurred… 1. 12 students stubbed two of their toes. 2. 8 students stubbed three. 3. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o During second recess, things got really bad… 1. 9 students stubbed 3 of their toes. 2. 7 students stubbed four. 3. 5 students stubbed all the toes on their left feet. 4. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o And last recess was the worst… 1. 6 students stubbed all the toes on their right feet. 2. 8 students stubbed 7 of their toes. 3. The rest of the students stubbed all the toes on both feet! Extensions (If you want to impress your teacher) o What if our teacher’s box had started with 500 bandages? How many would she have left after our flip flip ‘fiasco’? o What if twice as many toes had been stubbed? How many bandages would our teacher have used? How many would she have had left in a box of 1,000? ***Answer key included
