The Miracle Worker (1962): Complete Movie Guide

The Miracle Worker (1962): Complete Movie Guide
ELA, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

"The Miracle Worker" is a movie based on the true story of Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan. The film was released in 1962 and is directed by Arthur Penn. The movie begins with a young Helen Keller, who has been blind and deaf since she was a baby, causing chaos in her family's home. Her parents, Captain and Kate Keller, are at their wits' end and decide to hire a teacher to help her. Enter Anne Sullivan, a young woman who is also visually impaired but has managed to overcome her own obstacles. Anne arrives at the Keller's home and begins teaching Helen how to communicate using sign language. However, Helen is initially resistant to learning and is frustrated by Anne's attempts to teach her. Anne persists, though, and eventually breaks through to Helen, teaching her how to spell words by using her hands to feel the letters. The breakthrough moment comes when Anne takes Helen to a water pump outside and spells the word "water" into her hand as the water flows over them. Suddenly, Helen makes the connection between the word and the sensation of the water. This moment is often referred to as the "miracle." The rest of the movie follows Helen's progress as she learns to communicate more and more effectively with the help of Anne. There are many ups and downs along the way, including struggles with Helen's family and her own frustrations, but in the end, Helen is able to make great strides and become a successful student. "The Miracle Worker" is a powerful movie that shows the incredible determination of both Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan in the face of enormous challenges. Their story is a testament to the power of education and the human spirit. This video guide is for the 1962 vintage classic. This 16-question movie guide will help your students stay focused during this powerful and inspirational movie. This product also includes three reflection questions that will lead into a great class discussion about the film. This movie guide comes with an answer key. Ready to print and ready to use! Enjoy! Email Vocabulary Handout: Letter Writing and Life Skills

Email Vocabulary Handout: Letter Writing and Life Skills
Special Resources, Life Studies, ELA, Life Skills, Business, Career, Writing, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

This product contains a useful one-page handout with all the necessary vocabulary to get started with emails (including the dreaded "reply all" button). We spend so much time in the classroom teaching our students creative writing and essay writing, but when they have careers in the future, what kind of writing will occupy most of their day? Emails of course! In this handout, all of the basic vocabulary needed to understand writing emails is explained in simple language. The handout is even set-up like an email so students can see where each part of the message goes. Grades to Use With: This assignment could work well for students in grades 5-12. It could be a useful addition to an expository writing unit in the middle grades, or it could be an excellent resource for a life skills or career education class in high school. How to Use: Project this handout on the board, and explicitly teach your students the key vocabulary components of every email: to, carbon copy, blind carbon copy, subject, salutation, body, signature, attachments, compose, forward, reply, and reply all. Students need to know the function of each of these parts of the email (especially to avoid the dreaded "Reply All" mistake that we have all made once or twice). Then, use one or more of my email scenario activities to have your students practice writing emails that they will encounter as they move through high school and early adulthood. Each activity includes tips and reminders for the specific scenario and then a sample task that students need to write an email for. Check them out in my store: Emailing a Job Application Emailing an Apartment Listing Emailing a Potential Reference Emailing a Post Secondary Institution Emailing a Teacher or Coach
