Catch Me When You Can | A "Whodunnit" mystery about Jack the Ripper

Catch Me When You Can | A "Whodunnit" mystery about Jack the Ripper
Social Studies, Biographies, Grade 6, 7, 8, Activities, Games

I created this simulation to give my middle school students the opportunity to experience the Jack the Ripper phenomena. This simulation does not focus so much on the gory nature of the crime. Instead, the students become the detectives of the Whitechapel district of the London Metropolitan police. It becomes a race to catch Jack. The students get to make decisions and experience the consequences of their decisions as well. The whole class is involved and they are soon very engaged in the investigation. Here is what is included in this simulation: - A Lesson Plan/Procedure to help you organize and run the simulation - A Teacher Part for when you act as the Chief Inspector of District H - Whitechapel - Situation Reports for you to read each round - All the materials for Round #1 - "It Begins" - All the materials for Round #2 - "It Escalates" - All the materials for Round #3 - "The Double Event" - All the materials for Round #4 - "The Murders End?" - A Power Point to help introduce and ask important questions to debrief at the end - Maps of the Whitechapel district I designed the simulation to be completed in a one hour classroom setting. However, you can easily adapt this to whatever time frame or classroom setting you have. I hope you enjoy running the simulation.

8th Grade Math Bingo Review #1

8th Grade Math Bingo Review #1
, Grade 8, Activities, Games

This PowerPoint Presentation contains 2 bingo games of 8 questions each. The topics covered are: find the missing side of a right triangle, find the distance between two points in the coordinate plane, solve for angle pairs formed by 2 parallel lines cut by a transversal, compare numerals in different forms (radical, decimal, mixed) rate-time-distance problems, find unit cost, find the approximate position on the number line for a radical •Directions for BINGO. •Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students should put a mark in the corner of the square---Don’t have them completely mark out their answers in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game. •Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. •The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-10 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. •I like to give a piece of candy (like jolly rancher) for BINGOs. I always help students with their problems since I used BINGO as practice not as an assessment.

ee or ea Phonic Game
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Games

Pick the Apples — ea or ee Spelling Families Card Game: A game for 2 players A simple, fun board game I made to help children distinguish between ea and ee: two digraphs that sound the same but belong to different spelling families. Reading words with these sounds is straightforward once the patterns have been taught — but spelling is much harder. The child must remember not just the sound, but which family the word belongs to. Does feet use ee ? Does eat use ea ? This game gives children repeated, low-pressure practice sorting words into the right family, building the kind of memory that eventually makes correct spelling automatic. How to play: Each player takes a tree baseboard loaded with apple cards. Sound cards ( ea and ee ) and a couple of bad apple cards go into a feely bag. Picture cards are laid face up on the table. On each turn, a player draws a sound card from the bag and must find a picture card showing a word that contains that sound. A Word Bank Card is on hand for checking — the adult can help younger or less confident children locate the right word at first. A correct match lets the player keep the cards and move one apple from the tree to the basket. Draw a bad apple card, and the turn is lost. The first player to pick all their apples wins. Games make for stress-free learning! The bad apple cards introduce an element of luck that children love — and which serves a real purpose. When a child loses, it was the bad apple's fault, not theirs. For children who are used to struggling, that small thing makes a surprising difference. They stay in the game, stay relaxed, and the sorting and matching does its work quietly in the background. Useful for assessment too! Teachers will find the game useful for assessment too. Watch how the child approaches each picture card. Are they thinking about the sound and searching their memory for the right spelling family? Or are they recognising words by sight and hoping for the best? The answer tells you a lot about what to do next.
