This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

Each of these worksheets is dedicated to three levels of facts, with the last page covering all facts 0-12. Learners will work to solve traditional equations, both horizontal and vertical, as well as finding missing variables, and working through word problems. The remaining five worksheets cover concepts including fractions, geometry, measurement, place value, and multi-digit addition and subtraction. With the versatility of these worksheets, you won’t run into any problems in which capacity they can be used. As a supplement to your curriculum, provide these worksheets to your learners as homework, independent seat work, large group learning, or in your math learning center. For learners needing extra help with specific concepts, use these worksheets in small group learning or in one-on-one resource assistance. You’ll find they can also be implemented as a quick assessment tool throughout the school year. Not only that, but fourth grade teachers can gather information about their new learners in just a few minutes. One of the best things about this product is that your learners can avoid the summer slump by reinforcing what they learned the previous school year and prepping for their upcoming time in grade 4. How to Use: Students are given the following question: You have a six-sided die and a penny. If you roll the die twice and flip the penny twice, which is more likely: to get two sixes on the die or two heads from the penny? Explain your thinking using pictures, numbers, and words. Can you figure out the percentage chance of each event happening? Give students dice, coins, and mini whiteboards to work with so they can start to test out their ideas and theories. Encourage students to tackle the penny first as there are fewer results when flipping two coins. Students cut out the eighths and order them on the number line. I recommend they start with 4/8 and glue it at the halfway point benchmark to space them evenly. Here’s a ready-to-go math inquiry activity for your geometry unit. Students are tasked with drawing all the rectangles they can create with a specific area (24 units squared). Then, they calculate the perimeter of each rectangle. Finally, a prompt helps them notice the relationship between area and perimeter. Shapes that are longer and thinner will have a larger perimeter than other shapes with the same area. How to Use: Use this activity once your students have already had some practice calculating area and perimeter of rectangles. You could do a quick mini lesson about finding factors before handing out this activity , as your students need to determine the factors of 24 to complete this task (1x24, 2x12, 3x8 4x6). I let students work in pairs or small groups to complete this task as I want them talking about their math ideas! They will learn all about credit cards: interest rates, the annual fees, credit card perks, and credit limits. How to Use: 1. Use the handout page to start the lesson with your class: teach the credit card vocabulary and information that is included. 2. Show your students the 3 sample credit cards which are listed. Let your students go over the second page while in small groups. This way they can discuss all of the benefits and drawbacks of each card. 3. If your students struggle with unit rates, this Winter Digital Escape Room will give them the practice they need without the struggle. Rather than slog through another page of word problems, students are placed into a scenario where unit rate problems are a necessary part of bringing back the Frostbite Festival. This allows enough purpose to be added to avoid taking away from the math. Students work through twenty actual-unit-rate word problems set in four escape room winter scenes: The Snack Shack, Skating Trail, Yeti Workshop, and Penguin Performance. Students work with word problems related to cost, distance, time, and quantity from the everyday experience they realize from using unit rates. In order to progress, students must compute the correct answer and type it into the escape room. The escape room is a completely self-contained activity, which means students will not be able to progress with an incorrect answer, making this activity perfect for independent practice. One of the most beneficial aspects of this resource is the low level of work that it generates. There is no prep work that is necessary. You don’t have to set up anything, including logins and passwords and lock screens. You can just send out the link via Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Microsoft Teams, or whatever tool that you are using. They just click and start. This autosave functionality comes in very handy during longer class times or interruptions. So long as students have had the chance to log back into the same computer and browser, they will pick up exactly where they left off. To make it more flexible, a printable version is also included. You will get a worksheet featuring all twenty unit rate problems, a matching version task card set, and finally, a full answer key. This is perfect for math center activities, small-scale intervention groups, or homework. It is an easy way to get your high school students interested in personal financial literacy and building their wealth. 3 case studies are included with calculations to complete and questions to respond to. Each person has some assets and some liabilities. Students must add each of these categories up and find the difference to see how much net worth each person has. Then they need to think about what changes each person could make to their financial habits. Perhaps one person has too much debt or someone else isn't investing much even with a high income. Students can start to see how high income does not always lead to high net worth if the person spends more than they make and has debt. On the other hand, someone with a lower income can have a high net worth if they live a frugal lifestyle and save money in investments or property equity. Just because someone "looks" rich, doesn't mean that they are! Grades to Use WIth: The actual math in this assignment is quite simple: adding and subtracting numbers to the hundred thousands. Students could do the work by hand or with a calculator. Because of this, this assignment is accessible to students in grades 7-12 in regular math classes, adult education students, and high school special education students. The time before the holidays can get a little crazy in the classroom. Students are ready for a break and teachers are too! Keep your class engaged with EIGHT Days of math review! Each task builds off the next. Students will get clues as to where Santa might be hiding AFTER they correctly solve each math task. And don't worry, there is an ANSWER KEY. This resource lends itself to independent work but students can also work in groups of pairs to solve. Don't forget about the other holidays!
