Let's Talk Feelings SEL Presentation

In this SEL presentation, you will get a 5 slide Google Slide Presentation. This was originally created for remote learning, however you can adapt this for in the classroom as well. On the second slide, there is a read aloud that I created for the book My Cold Plum Lemon Pie Bluesy Mood by Tameka Brown. This is a wonderful book about a boy with many different feelings, emotions, and moods throughout the book. On the 3rd slide, there is access to a digital spinner with many different feelings on it. Once you click on the spinner in presentation mode, it will create a new tab, scroll down for the large spinner with a variety of feelings on it. When you click on the spinner, it will move and make spinner sounds. You can choose a student to come to the board or your computer to click it to stop. When it stops there will be a feeling on the screen. You can have students turn and talk about when they have felt that way, you could have them talk in groups, you could do it whole classroom and students can raise their hand. Play as many rounds as you have time for. Next on slide 4 the students can do a feelings scavenger hunt where they find something in the classroom (or home if it remote) that reminds them of that feeling. There is animated picture of feelings that come up on the screen. This gets kids up and moving in the classroom and having fun. Finally, on the last slide you will have access to a homework sheet to pass out to students called Inside/Outside Feelings Scavenger Hunt. Students can take this home and fill it out. They will answer prompts for; That makes you feel silly?, What reminds you of a trip, etc. There are 12 prompts for them to answer.

Melody's Mystery Game-An SEL Cooperative Game for Kids

In this resource, students will work together to solve Melody's Mystery! Melody is an actress and has lost something at the Golden Globe Award ceremony. Students will need to decide what is missing, who took it and where it is. Students will work together cooperatively and problem solve together to solve this mystery. There are 18 clues to be passed around to a group of students (4-5 students works best) and then they will read out loud each clue. As they read the clues, the group will eliminate the suspects one by one and there is one person who will cross off the ones that are incorrect. This is a great game for students to play to practice listening skills, leadership skills, problem-solving skills and deductive skills. Fear of insects Social Story

For children who experience intense fear or phobias related to insects, this social story resource provides supporting explanations and coping strategies. Specifically tailored for children on the autism spectrum who may struggle reading social cues, the story aims to logically address the reasons behind insect fears and equip children with skills to manage them. Using a reassuring tone, the social story explains how most insects pose no real danger to humans, as many are so tiny compared to a person’s size. While some insects like bees can sting, the story gives facts about how insect stings rarely cause serious harm. It also highlights all the useful things insects do, like pollinating plants. The second half of the story outlines constructive ways children can deal with insect fears when encountered. This includes techniques like staying calm, thinking logical thoughts about how small insects are, and reminding themselves that insects are useful to their earth. By addressing both the emotional and reality-based sides of insect fears, this social story uses clear language and visuals to teach autistic children coping methods. It validates their feelings while also gently challenging catastrophic thinking. The final outcome is a set of strategies children can employ themselves when afraid, giving them skills, reassurance, and power to manage phobias. These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. Groups of 4-5 students will work together to figure out Michael's Mystery. Michael is a quarterback for the Washington Gorillas and has lost something and refuses to play in the game until it is found. There are three categories to solve; what is missing, who took it and where is it. There are 18 clues and 6 possible suspects in each of the categories. This game teaches how to work together for a common purpose. Students will need to access their listening skills, problem-solving skills, deduction skills and leadership skills. This Guided Reading Book - Who Cooks for the Community (Level H) includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Using text to learn job-specific actions and tools (checking supplies, chopping ingredients, measuring, mixing dough, cleaning pots and pans). Learning Goals Students will describe how kitchens help the community using details from the book. Students will identify at least three kitchen jobs named in the text and tell what each job does. Students will explain what the head chef decides and why that role is important. Students will describe how the prep cook helps the other cooks work faster, using text evidence. Cupcake Emotions

Students can learn about basic feelings and emotions with these cupcake feelings and emotions cards and playdough activity. This cupcake activity will make a great Valentine's Day or bakery theme for students who are learning about emotions and feelings that are common to them. What is Included: There are 12 different cupcake feelings and emotions cards for students to look at and view. There is also a playdough mat for students to build faces on to express those same feelings and emotions. How to Use: The students will choose which of the cupcake mats they would like to use to build their faces on. They will then choose a cupcake emotions card and attempt to recreate the feeling on their mat using playdough. When to Use: Fine Motor Center - This feelings and emotions activity can be used in a fine motor center by simply placing the cards, mats and playdough in the center . Students can work independently or with a partner to complete these cards. Morning Activity - These mats and cards can be placed inside a morning tub or basket for students to work on as classmates arrive to class. Quiet Activity - These mats and cards make a great quiet time activity for students who do not nap. Small Group Activity - Teachers can pull aside small groups of students to practice identifying different feelings and emotions. Skills Assessed: These mats allow students to explore different feelings and emotions with a fun cupcake theme. The added use of playdough adds a fine motor activity for students to build those hand muscles. The cupcake feelings and emotions cards are low prep. They just need to be printed and cut apart, lamination is optional for durability. The playdough mats are no prep. The should be laminated or placed in a page protector so the playdough does not stick to them.

"Responsibility" Character Traits Song

Many of our students love learning in a variety of ways and music is one of those! We can retain information better when we hear it through songs and visual videos. This is one reason we like to incorporate music in our learning environments. We don’t have to limit music to music class only for our students. In my store, you’ll find a wide array of music resources that students will love to learn from. What You Get: This is a music video for your elementary students. The title of this song is “Responsibility.”This is a song and video that will teach students about character and taking responsibility. This video provides explanations and many examples to support student learning. You can implement this video at the introduction of teaching this character trait. The objective is for students to better understand how to be responsible and what it takes to have good character. This would be a song that I play multiple times for my students across the course of this unit .
