Reindeer Counting Mats with Tens Frames

Students will have fun counting up to 10 and practicing fine motor skills with these reindeer counting mats. These mats allow students to get ample practice counting to 10 with the colorful and fun images centered around monsters. Students will want to complete these cards again and again. What is Included: There is one reindeer themed mat for each number 1 through 10. Each mat includes colorful and bright images to keep students engaged in counting. How to Use: Students will take a mat. They will look at the number or number word at the top of the mat, and then use playdough, or other manipulatives to count to the given number by adding the manipulatives to the tens frame. When to Use: Math Center - These mats can be used in a math center by simply placing the mats and playdough inside each center . Students can work independently or with a partner to complete these mats. Morning Activity - These mats can be placed inside a morning tub or basket for students to work on as classmates arrive to class. Here is a picture of Holly for children to colour this winter! Who is this colouring picture of Holly for? Anybody. Older children will extend the activity further than younger ones, Uses for these colouring sheets Use to help children learn the name of the Holly bush and to recognise it. Use as part of a science lesson on evergreens or trees/plants Paint or colour. Use to make seasonal/Christmas cards The study of the natural world is the foundation for the later study of science. The colouring of pictures of natural things, be it plants or animals is more than a pastime activity. It is a means of familiarising young children with these everyday subjects. The colouring of this Holly spray picture can of course be used as a pastime, or even as part of a creative lesson - the picture looks super made into a greeting card of all kinds. But it has the potential to teach much more. The Curriculum for Science expects children to be taught to use the local environment to study plants and animals, throughout the year. What better than to use familiar subjects - such as Holly which is sure to attract attention in winter when all else looks dead. Be sure to tell the children not to eat Holly berries as they are very poisonous! Colouring can help children to become familiar with the parts of the Holly bush ask questions: What are the leaves like? Who might like to eat the berries? What is inside a berry? (the seeds). Colouring a picture of Holly can also help children become familiar with the particular characteristics of a plant - its shape, colour, and special features, for example. It is best if children colour the Holly picture following close observation, or from reference books, or after having looked at Holly in real life. Why not take a spray into the classroom and carefully let the children feel the prickly leaves?
