Droughts Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Science, Technology, Social Studies, History, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Geography, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans
This droughts reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Droughts Genre: Nonfiction (informational text with headings) Subject: Earth Science / Life Science / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: What drought is, types, effects, and tracking Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): Q What This Lesson Teaches Best Defines drought as a stretch of time when a region is drier than normal and can last from days to years. Explains types of drought (meteorological vs. hydrological) and describes what changes in streams, reservoirs, and groundwater. Uses concrete signs/evidence of drought (no puddles, dull grass, cracked ground, animals traveling farther, rivers showing more rocks). Connects history to learning: the Dust Bowl in the 1930s and how it led to soil-saving methods and drought indices. Introduces modern monitoring and responses (rain gauges, river sensors, satellites; fixing leaks, reusing water, collecting rain). Learning Goals Students will define drought using the book’s description and time frames. Students will identify signs of drought described in the passage (e.g., puddles, grass, cracked ground, rivers). Students will explain the difference between meteorological drought and hydrological drought using text evidence. Students will describe what happened during the Dust Bowl and why it mattered for tracking dryness. Students will describe ways droughts are monitored today and one way communities can respond. Key Vocabulary From the Text meteorological — related to weather and rainfall or snow. hydrological — related to water in rivers, reservoirs, and underground. groundwater — water stored under the ground. indices — numbers used to compare and track dryness. evapotranspiration — water moving from land and plants into air. Unplugged Coding Task Cards | 30 Debugging WarmUps K-2 | No Tech
Computer Science, Technology, Science, Winter, Seasons, Holiday & Seasonal, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, Centers, Activities, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools, Task Cards, Worksheets & Printables
Find the Bug: Picture Debugging Warm-Ups | Grades K–2 Picture debugging task cards make early computer science accessible to young learners with 30 visual bug-finding challenges that require no student reading and no devices . Students look closely, find what does not fit, explain their thinking to a partner, and draw the fix. What’s Included This resource includes six separate PDF files : Teacher Guide – 6 pages Teacher directions and implementation ideas Teacher script for guiding students without giving away the answer Standards alignment Scope and sequence Two-week pacing plan Student Reference – 2 pages Five-step picture debugging cycle Student-friendly debugging checklist LOOK → POINT → SAY → FIND → FIX routine Recording Pages – 2 pages Draw-the-fix response sheet Student debugging tracker Progress tracking by bug type Picture Cards 1–30 – 30 pages 30 visual debugging task cards 6 bug types 3 difficulty levels One card per page Answer Key – 8 pages Correct answer for every card Suggested fix Misconception behind each bug Notes for teacher conferencing Alternate correct fixes identified where appropriate Terms & Credits – 2 pages Six Bug Types Students practice six foundational types of picture debugging : Order — steps are in the wrong order Patterns — one piece breaks a repeating or growing pattern Robot Path — one arrow points the wrong way Count It — the number does not match the quantity Sort It — something is in the wrong category Match It — one pair does not go together How It Works in the Classroom ⭐ Bell-Ringers Project one picture debugging card and work through it together. Read the goal aloud twice. Let students turn and talk. Have students identify the bug. Ask them to explain why it is wrong. Finish by drawing the fix. The teacher guide recommends approximately 5–8 minutes per card , with one card per day providing about six weeks of warm-up practice. ⭐ Stations Print and laminate the cards and place them at a station with the recording page. Students: Look at the goal. Examine each picture. Find the box, arrow, or pair that does not fit. Explain their thinking. Draw the correction. Five cards make a comfortable 15-minute station rotation . ⭐ Whole Group These cards are especially effective for carpet time and partner discussion. Because the cards are visual, the teacher reads the goal aloud while students do the actual problem solving. The spoken explanation is part of the assessment , making this more than simply a "find the wrong picture" activity. ⭐ Sub Plans No login, devices, or previous computer science experience are required. Print the cards, student checklist, recording pages, and answer key, and you have a ready-to-use unplugged activity. Standards & Learning Goals Students practice early computational thinking through: Debugging errors in algorithms and programs Following and evaluating sequences Recognizing repeating and growing patterns Following precise sequences of directions Connecting numbers with quantities Sorting objects according to rules Matching objects by attributes Explaining their reasoning to a partner The resource is aligned to CSTA 1A-AP-14 and CSTA 1A-AP-08 , with additional connections to CSTA 1A-AP-09, 1A-AP-10, and 1A-AP-11 , as well as CCSS.MATH.K.CC.B.4, CCSS.MATH.K.MD.B.3, and CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1 . The six bug types intentionally move from familiar visual reasoning into more challenging concepts. For example, Card 24 asks students to determine whether 3 is less than 3 , introducing boundary testing, while Card 25 requires students to apply two rules at once . Why Teachers Love It ⭐ Misconception-focused answer key The answer key explains why children may make the mistake , not just which answer is correct. This gives teachers useful language for guiding students without simply revealing the solution. ⭐ No reading required Students do not need to read the cards independently. The teacher reads the goal aloud, making this accessible to pre-readers, emerging readers, and English learners . ⭐ Truly unplugged No computers, logins, coding platforms, or devices are needed. ⭐ Builds debugging habits early Students learn that debugging means searching for what does not fit—not simply waiting for an adult to point out the mistake. ⭐ Encourages mathematical reasoning Counting, sorting, patterns, quantities, size, shape, color, and comparison are naturally embedded throughout the cards. ⭐ Built-in progression Each bug type includes three levels of difficulty. One-dot cards have visible bugs, two-dot cards require a trace or test value, and three-dot cards look correct until students check them carefully against the goal. ⭐ Great for partner talk Every card asks students to explain their thinking, giving young learners practice with mathematical and computational reasoning. ⭐ Supports differentiation The scope and sequence makes it easy to pull a specific group of cards for targeted reteaching. ⭐ Original visual design Every picture is an original drawing, so the cards are designed specifically for this resource rather than relying on generic clipart. Make early computer science visual, accessible, and engaging with ready-to-use picture debugging task cards for Grades K–2 ! Use them for morning work, carpet time, computer science warm-ups, partner activities, stations, or unplugged coding practice. Students will build the habit of looking carefully, finding the problem, explaining their thinking, and trying a fix. Add Find the Bug to your classroom and give your youngest learners a fun way to start thinking like problem-solvers and debuggers! 💛
