About Social Story - Getting Homework Done This Social Story is an interactive book/printable designed to offer students strategies to complete their homework independently with success! Children become the main character of the story as they answer questions, color, draw pictures as they discuss strategies for completing homework independently! This resource is a great behavior support tool to teach at the beginning of the year. This is a great resource to send home with your students to encourage discussions with their parents about good homework habits! WHAT IS INCLUDED: Social Story Explanation Social Story Full Book Print-out Social Story Half-Page Print-out Discussion Guide Google Slides Ages: This book is best suited for ages 7-12. Could also be adapted for ages below and above this range! How I Use this Resource in My Classroom- I like to spend A LOT of time in the beginning of the school year teaching social stories focused positive behavior expectations. I have found that I often assume students have the skills they need to "do school", but am often humbled with the amount of explicit instruction students need surrounding skills like completing their homework. Timing- I usually schedule this social story around the end of the first month of school. I like to make sure I have sent the activity home before back-to-school night so that I can mention it with parents during my presentation. This way, families that did not have the homework discussion at home have the chance to do so... it is so important! Then, I usually re-teach the lesson halfway through the school year when students need a reminder of the important skills! How I teach it - I always teach this social story as a whole class lesson instead of in small groups. The skills included in this social story are really valuable to all students. Included in the product is a discussion guide that will walk you through exactly how to present the information to your students. I always print out the half-page version for each student. I display the teacher slides on my Active Board and the students fill out their book as I fill out the one on the board. Sending the Book Home - One of the cool aspects about this social story is that there are parts for the students to bring home and complete with their families. This fosters really great discussions around good homework habits and parents love having this as a resource. Behavior Remediation Tool - This is one of those social stories that keeps coming back many times throughout the school year. Once a student becomes a repeat offender of not completing their homework, the first thing I do is come back to this resource! I have the student review their social story and see if there are any skills they can sharpen to help them become successful at completing their homework on their own again. It opens up a great place for honest conversation and helps you determine what barriers the student is facing keeping them from being successful at this essential component of being a student. Hearing Versus Listening SEL Lesson

In this Hearing VS. Listening lesson, students will understand that hearing is a passive skill whereas listening is a more active social skill. There are descriptions of the differences between the two with a slide for students to guess 6 sounds (answers are in the slide notes) -this is highly engaging for students. Then students will do an activity with partners to listen and follow instructions, ask questions, and listen to feedback about a drawing activity (drawings A and B are on slides 8 and 9). This is a great lesson to teach the skills of listening and to reference in the future when students need to be reminded of the key elements of listening versus just hearing. This is also a great preview for students to practice role-playing about how to listen to one another.

Responsible Decision-Making Learning About Mental Time Travel is a great resources to have students explore the process of decision-making in a responsible manner! This resource includes the lesson to walk students through the process of decision-making through “mental time-travel” as a way to “see” the future and hence the consequences of their choices. The lesson includes engaging questions to encourage students to critically think about their choices. Additionally, students can be presented with 10 different comic strips for them to complete as examples of decision-making. Students can then share and discuss the different options presented to the characters on the comic strips. These comic strips can be handed out at random or to form groups of the same comic strip. Furthermore, students can be presented with the High 5 Handout included in this resource so that each of them write down a goal in the circle provided. To reach that goal the class may engage in a discussion on how to get to that future goal. Teachers and students can also talk about the little things they can do to reach simple goals so students can think of a goal as steps to take in the future. To end the lesson, students can use the High 5 Handout to write down 5 different things they can do to achieve that goal to exemplify how to get to the goal as their “future.” This resource is presented in a PPT (which includes the lesson and comic strips) and a PDF which includes the handout. All slides , comic strips, and handouts are ready to use and to print!

Being able to build a positive classroom community is critical for teachers. A part of that positive classroom community is making sure all students feel supported and included as best as possible. Even though we cannot control all circumstances, inside and outside our classrooms, affirmations are a great way to help students retrain their mind and see things with a more positive lens! This is a Positive Self-Affirmations Lesson for students to take part in. The objective of this lesson is for students to learn more about what affirmations are, why they are important, and how to implement them within their daily lives. This is a resource that is appropriate for most grade levels and can be utilized with any teacher! It is a 25-slide PowerPoint that begins with questions for students to brainstorm in relation to things they may feel or think at times. Students will listen to a 10-minute TED Talk on YouTube and then go over the success criteria for the lesson. After learning about what affirmations are and how they can help, students will have some time to practice mindfulness through meditation. Other topics included in this lesson are: 1. Examples of affirmations 2. When to use affirmations 3. How to use affirmations 4. How to write affirmations The student assignment: Write at least 10 affirmations.
