In this lesson, students will learn about how to be good sports. They will learn about poor versus good sportsmanship. There is a 6 slide Google Presentation that guides the lesson. Please review the slide notes on each slide to better understand the directions and flow of the lesson. The 7th Slide is a personalized handout you can create for each student with their name and it will state " Jenny Is A Good Sport" or whatever you would like to say on it. Simply click on the Word Art and change the name or words for your sports' personalized mindfulness coloring sheet. This is a great extension to this lesson. The lesson begins with a quick opener of having the students do 5 wall or floor push-ups. This is a great opener and engagement activity. Then student will think-pair-share with a partner about poor versus good sportsmanship examples. Then they can share out or you can have a student or two write down the poor versus good examples in a T chart on the Smartboard or a poster sheet. Next students will tally the amount of good sportsmanship examples they see in a Youtube video. Discuss everyone's calculations! Next, you will discuss the directions to the game of slapjack (the video is in the slide on Slideshow and also in the Slide Notes). This is where the teachable moments come in. Say to the class "Please look for the person in your group who is showing Good Sportsmanship" behaviors. After the game, ask students to write down the name of someone of a couple people who showed good sportsmanship behaviors. Then as you say the names, ask the students to echo each name to honor those students. Lastly, if there is time or on another day, copy the personalized handouts for each student with their name. You may change the wording if you wish!!! SLANT Strategy Lesson-A lesson about paying attention and listening

In this resource, students will learn about the strategy called S.L.A.N.T. This is a strategy to teach students how to pay attention and listen. This can be such a critical skill when students are in school, at home, and with their friends. SLANT stands for S-Sit up, L-Lean forward, A-Ask questions, N-Nod head, T-Track the speaker. Students will first be asked about what does "paying attention" and "listening" mean. They will also be encouraged to talk about who and what they need to pay attention to and listen to at home and school. Then they will learn about the SLANT strategy. They will be asked to participate in a partner activity in which they will tell about a happy memory for 2-3 minutes with a beginning, middle, and end for the story. They will then ask their partner a question about their memory to see if they were listening. The partner is allowed to ask 1-2 questions if they are unclear about some details. Next, they will swap roles and the person who shared is now the listener and vice versa. The PPT slideshow will prompt some questions about what was easy or challenging about this activity. The last part of the lesson is a fun game called "When someone claps twice." This is such a fun game that your students will want to play again and again. I placed this at the end of the lesson because you can play it as many times as time allows. There are 27 commands in the game . The teacher begins the game by passing out a strip of paper to each student. Some students may get 2 strips as there are 27 strips and you may not have 27 students. That is o.k.! It adds to the challenges. After the teacher claps twice, the student with the command "When the teacher claps twice, ..." needs to do the task on their strip of paper. Then the next student needs to do the task after the student does their task and so on. To reinforce the SLANT strategy, you can print off either slide 5 or 10 and put up in the classroom.

This resource is a set of Let's Chat Conversation Cards for "Let Your Love Light Shine." The “Let’s Chat Conversation Cards is a wonderful resource to help students build a positive mindset. This resource is part of a whole program that works towards having students believe they can be compassionate, have perseverance, respect, and responsibility and through it all, achieve great things! Let’s Chat Conversation Cards allows for real conversations through which students may learn of different perspectives and strengthen friendships through truly understanding each other. This resource is a set of Let's Chat Conversation Cards for "Let Your Love Light Shine." There are 57 other Let's Chat resources available, along with matching Respectful Signage listed under "graphics". The "Home Connects" for families is available in English and Spanish. Meridian MS Public Schools has been a partner district of Respectful Ways since October of 2020 and they shared this year’s Panorama Data with us. Meridian students who are utilizing Respectful Ways and PBIS showed great improvements in these 3 key areas: 12% higher GPAs 37% attendance improvements 93% less referrals Respectful Ways is a trauma-informed program: Assessment: Take our survey to assess your school climate. Targeted Results: Your survey identifies modules that meet your students' social and emotional needs. Our trauma-informed online curriculum has been vetted by the Attachment & Trauma Network. Custom Professional Development: We offer workshops with subject-matter experts who use your data to address student behavioral needs and educator wellness needs. Blended Education Interventions: Respectful Ways (RW) integrates seamlessly with different instructional frameworks such as PBIS and MTSS, using evidence and research-based practices.
