Feelings & Moods Airplane Analogy Google Slides SEL Lesson-Includes Engaging Video and Craft!

In this lesson, students will learn about their feelings and moods using an airplane analogy. There is an engaging opening video that I self-made and published explaining the analogy of the student as a pilot controlling their feelings and moods with the metaphor of an airplane. The airplane represents feeling down or sad when it flies down into the clouds and represents feeling excited or happy/calm when it flies high into the sky near the sunshine. The students will really understand this metaphor as most students are familiar with flying and planes. The video is almost 3 minutes, has fun music in the background and my voice is recorded over the music, explaining how our feelings and moods are connected to our thoughts. I discuss ways to think about tough situations differently or accept things that we cannot control There is also a paper airplane craft (at the end of the slide presentation) with instructions for how to fold it. Students have a prompt on the airplane to write down how they can change their feelings/moods. They can also color their airplane and customize it! The lesson flows from each slide and there are 9 slides for the lesson. The 10th and 11th slide is the airplane template as well as the folding instructions. This is a great way to teach students about the power of their thoughts and how they can change their feelings and moods if they change their thoughts. There is also discussion about things we can control and things we cannot control. Focusing on the things we can control will lessen a student's anxiety, fears, and sadness. In this product, there is a 9 slide PowerPoint and a Scenario handout. This is an SEL presentation. Students will learn about the concept of intent versus impact. This lesson is especially good for students who joke around without realizing their jokes/teasing is hurtful. The PowerPoint guides the lesson. In this SEL presentation, you will get a 5 slide Google Slide Presentation. This was originally created for remote learning, however you can adapt this for in the classroom as well. On the second slide, there is a read aloud that I created for the book My Cold Plum Lemon Pie Bluesy Mood by Tameka Brown. This is a wonderful book about a boy with many different feelings, emotions, and moods throughout the book. On the 3rd slide, there is access to a digital spinner with many different feelings on it. Once you click on the spinner in presentation mode, it will create a new tab, scroll down for the large spinner with a variety of feelings on it. When you click on the spinner, it will move and make spinner sounds. You can choose a student to come to the board or your computer to click it to stop. When it stops there will be a feeling on the screen. You can have students turn and talk about when they have felt that way, you could have them talk in groups, you could do it whole classroom and students can raise their hand. Play as many rounds as you have time for. Next on slide 4 the students can do a feelings scavenger hunt where they find something in the classroom (or home if it remote) that reminds them of that feeling. There is animated picture of feelings that come up on the screen. This gets kids up and moving in the classroom and having fun. Finally, on the last slide you will have access to a homework sheet to pass out to students called Inside/Outside Feelings Scavenger Hunt. Students can take this home and fill it out. They will answer prompts for; That makes you feel silly?, What reminds you of a trip, etc. There are 12 prompts for them to answer.

Healthy Versus Unhealthy Friendships SEL PowerPoint And Game

In this lesson, students will learn about the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendship behaviors. I use the analogy of a stoplight to distinguish between green (healthy), yellow (warning), and red (unhealthy) friendship behaviors. There is a 9-slide PowerPoint presentation that walks you through the entire lesson with slide notes. After the presentation, there is a reinforcing friendship game . The game board and 36 editable friendship behavior cards are on slides 10-19 and can be printed off in color or black and white. The game board needs to be printed in color. There is a fun and short video to show the class about friendship. I utilize whole group, small group, and partner activities in this lesson for engagement and variety. This lesson can flexibly span between 30-45 minute periods based on the amount of discussion you encourage and your needs/time constraints. There are 30 cards (some instructional cards explaining the different friendship behaviors) and plenty of task cards for an entire class to take turns on the Smartboard to decide if a situation is red, yellow or green. This is an important friendship skill when learning about making and keeping friends. Both of these resources are great for third, fourth, fifth, sixth and middle school.
