The Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching Activity is a simple activity for those just starting to learn the initial/beginning sounds. This game provides 2 activities in one, either an activity for one player, or a game for two or three players. For use: In the classroom - centres, paired activities, intervention etc.. At home - by parents + home-educators Aim of the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching Activity : ·That the child will be able to match the correct letter to the correct picture by initial (or beginning) sound ·That children will hear the initial (or beginning) sound of a word ·That children will know the sound that each letter /a/ to /z/ stands for To prepare the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching Activity : Print the pages you require (colour or black and white). Cut along the lines to separate the letters from the pictures. To play the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching Activity Play as an activity for one player: Scatter the cards face up on the left and the letters cards, face up on the right-hand side of the player. The player should select a picture card, say the word and listen for the initial sound. The player should then find the matching letter that stands for that sound. Completed pairs are placed in front of the player. For two or three players: Scatter the pictures and letters as before, but face down. Players take turns to select a picture, say the initial sound and then attempt to find the matching letter that stands for that sound. Wrong attempts should be returned to the pools of cards. The players place their completed pairs in front of them and compete to find the most pairs before the cards run out. Teaching tips for the Initial/Beginning Sounds Matching Activity : Do give support as needed so that the child feels successful. We need the child to end the game feeling s/he can do this. Playing the Game After the titles and information about the game, the first game will begin. Students will be shown a close-up photo of an object and have to guess what it is. Press the = button for the answer and the original photo with word will appear. Press the arrow button to move onto the next question. 6 questions in total. Second game is a memory game. Starting with three pictures and ending up with six, students have ten seconds to observe the pictures on the screen, then need to say the words they remember. The picture page will automatically move on after ten seconds but if you wish to move on yourself quicker then there is an arrow button. In the answer screen, answers will flash if correct, dim if incorrect. Finally game is more like a question and answer, but in two parts. In the part, there will be a clue and 3-6 words to choose from. Press the correct answer. In the second section you will get the reverse, one word and then two to three clues to choose from. Choose the correct clue for the word. Includes arrows to move onto the next page. This is a Let's Talk About The Zoo Board English / English as a Second Language Game. All you have to do is print this game board and grab a pair of dice. The game board can be printed in color or black and white. This simple game board is great for your English-speaking students and your ESL students who are building their language skills in the English language. Students can work in pairs or groups of 3-4. You can also pull students in a small group with you to better assess their progress and mastery. These board games are great because they come in a variety of themes and topics, so students will be able to increase their vocabulary in a fun and playful way. You can choose to do a few different activities when you use these board games : 1.Students can take turns rolling the dice. They will move that many places on the board. Whatever space they land on, they can read the question out loud and answer it verbally with their partner or group. 2.Same as number 1, but the partner can answer the question instead of the person who rolled the dice. 3.Same as number 1, but both partners (or everybody in the group) can write their answer down on paper. 4.Same as number 1, but students can practice writing down the question and their individual answer to the question. If you choose to make it a competition, then whoever reaches the end of the board first wins! But in this series of games the main focus is not on winning but on talking and discussing topics! Practice reading and writing CVC words with these fun AM word family dice games. Students will practice recognizing, reading, writing and spelling words with the AM rime. What is Included: Dice templates to go with each of the game mats Seven recording mats that go with one of the dice sets. To play, students will roll the dice. Depending on the mat they are using, students will color, trace, cover, graph, or write the word or image that was rolled. They just need to be printed out and put in the center or station you wish to use them in. The dice will need to be assembled. You will need to print them out on card stock or other heavy weight paper, cut, fold and tape together. The mats can be laminated to make them reusable, especially of you need to save paper. Dry erase markers can be used on the writing and tracing mats.

This game will help your children to learn to hear the sounds ‘ar’ and ‘or’ in words and to read words containing these sounds. This game is black and white for eco-printing at home, or to send home. A colour version can be found in the Lilibette's Resources store. Who is it for: Children who are learning the digraphs ar and or. Those children working in Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds Those children working in Speed Set 2 of RWI. Who can use the ar/or game? Teachers, parents, private tutors - anyone who needs it! How to make the game Print out pages 4 to 9, on card. Cut out the picture cards (pages 6 - 8). Cut up the ar/or cards (page 9). Write ‘ar’ on the back of one baseboard (pages 4/5) and ‘or’ on the back of the other. Write ‘ar’ or ‘or’ as appropriate on the backs of the picture cards. Find a bag or small box to put the small letter ar/or cards in. How to play the game This is a game for 2 players. It is best if an adult plays with each child individually first and then when each child in a pair is confident, they can play in together. The game can be played with the picture and word cards alone, without the ar/or cards - as a simple matching game. This is how it has been designed to be played: Take a baseboard each. This will decide who is collecting ‘ar’ pictures and ‘or’ pictures. Choose 6 ar and 6 or cards (you can choose different pictures each time you play). Scatter the picture cards picture side up. Take it in turns to take an ‘ar’/’or’ letter card from the bag/box. If the player with the ‘ar’ baseboards picks an ‘ar’ card, s/he may choose a picture with the ar sound in. Likewise with ‘or’. Players may only turn the picture card over to check that they are correct. If not, the picture card is replaced. The winner is the first to fill his/her card. Do: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your go and invite your pupil’s help, so they get even more practice. Look at the cards that are left. What sound do they have in them?
