First Week of School Getting to Know You Activity

Let's face it, the first week of school can be really hectic! Having fun activities that keep students engaged are key to a successful start of the year. What's better than doing activities where students tell all about themselves? That's exactly what they'll do with this fun activity . There are two pages that can be put together as a little book, or placed together on large construction paper. Students color the cover page and make it their own. They can add pictures and words that describe them and their favorites. For the writing page, students simply fill in the blanks to finish the sentences correctly. Since this works well for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders, not having a lot to write will make your life easier! After finishing the sentences, students will draw their portrait. I gave an outline for them to begin with because otherwise you'll probably get a lot of very small pictures. These are fun to put up on a bulletin board or out in the hallway by your classroom. I would also keep them all year in a safe place to add to students' portfolios at the end of the year. They really love to look back at what they did during the first week! First Week of School Writing Activities

Do you want to give your students some activities at the beginning of the year to see what they're capable of? Do you want to get to know them? These two writing activities are perfect for that first week of school. The first activity has students write about themselves. This is not in complete sentences. If you have older students and you want to see their paragraph writing ability, you could definitely have them fill this out as a graphic organizer, and then they can write the information in a paragraph. Examples of what's on this page are what subjects they are good at, what subjects they struggle with, and what they're looking forward to. The second activity has students write about their family. This isn't meant to be a long writing piece, just a short paragraph. You could brainstorm ideas of what to write on the board together, then have them do a cold write. A cold write is good at the beginning of the year so you can see their writing ability. Since it's about their family, students will be interested in it. You will receive a pdf with 2 pages for students to fill out. These will be a great addition to your back to school/first week of school activities!
