What Should My First Grader’s Handwriting Look Like?
It’s not uncommon to see first graders struggle with handwriting. Their letters may be hard to read, slanted, or inverted. As the school year goes on and as students get more handwriting practice, they will refine these skills.
Ideally in first grade, handwriting will be uniform in terms of size. Spacing between letters should make it clear where one word stops and another begins. It can be easy to conflate spelling and handwriting, but when we are focused on handwriting we are looking at the articulation of the letters. Spelling is a separate skill.
