How Do You Explain Tens and Ones to 1st Graders?

First graders will be able to grasp the concept of tens and ones if you break it down into simple ideas and offer them visuals or hands-on blocks to use while learning it.

When you count out single pieces in front of them, pause at ten. Illustrate to the students that ten pieces of one is the same as (replace the ten pieces with one block) one unit of ten.

You can further illustrate this by doing the same process again; keep your unit of ten and add three pieces, asking the students how much there now is in total. They should easily be able to conclude that this is the number 13. Continue adding pieces until there is a unit of ten beside ten pieces. Ask the students if you can replace the ten pieces with a unit of ten. When they say “yes,” replace the pieces with another block, indicating there are now 20 in total, or two blocks of ten.

Offer the students their own pieces to count. You can supplement this lesson with a worksheet focused on grouping objects or different numbers that they can demonstrate and solve using their pieces and blocks.

How Do You Write a Number Line for 1st Graders?

Number lines help students make sense of simple single and double digit numbers and math problems; they can look at their number lines to help them work on their addition and subtraction problems. Number lines also help students make sense of word problems and data analysis.

The best way to introduce and write number lines for 1st graders is to incorporate number line worksheets that leave some numbers blank, so students can learn to fill out a number line themselves. Check out these printable 1st grade math worksheets on number lines or the ones I highlighted above.
